Labour charge for faulty lock

Postby prag » 24 May 2008 14:47

A client request a key for his van canopy lock. Similiar to this one.

http://www.lowe-and-fletcher.co.uk/CATALOG/ENGLISH.HTM

There was a few differences to the lock but this is not the issue. The lock normally has either the code on the facing or front side of the lock or ,if the lock is stripped, on the shaft connecting the two handles.

The code will give you the cuts. This had none, so I stripped the lock and made the key. Reassembled it and the key turn but the mechanism inside was busted. :( :(

Let me just repeat, the key worked fine.

Now the ethical question. Do I charge labour for the work I done, because the key I made worked and there was a problem with the lock itself, or do I just not bother charging the client. Considering it took close to an hour from client walking in till refitting lock.

If you went to the doctor and he told you nothing was wrong you would still get a bill.......... Get paid for the work you do, no exceptions.

I absolutely agree. If you don't charge for work done, the client doesn't know you're actually doing real work. If you charge, they have a better idea of how much work was actually put into the job.
