Fortress? ya right

I just went to pick up this Fortress padlock from target just to get my feet wet with lockpicking, and the second i inserted my pick it turned ha! It has 4 pins but it seems as if only the last one actually does anything, i didn't even try, now i want to go get a different one I'm highly disappointed

Lol. I have a Master #3 like that. Only half of the pins seem to engage the lock.

I had a Fortress like that. After a couple of pickings though, it apparently disassembled itself and choked on a spring. From that experience, I'd never trust a lock that doesn't appear to be using all the pins to lock.

One of the $2 shop locks I bought did that, although it was 5 pins, on the key it only had like 2 major grooves

I have a fortress and it seems to work properly. I wonder if it's just the model that you have. Or perhaps it's just the model that I have that seems more difficult. On the other hand, I do have a few locks that do this. I have a Master 140 that, even though it has a security pin, it seems like that's the only pin in it. I pick the pin to a false set, then let off the tension and the immediately reapply it, then voila, the plug turns. From what I understand, this is very uncommon for 140s and they are a lot harder than mine typically. I think I got gypped out of a learning experience with my 140. Oh well. I suppose if I REALLY wanted to, I could go out and buy another.

I have two fortresses, both from target. I have a funny feeling that they are manufactured with horrible tolerances, as mine are sometimes quite hard to pick, even acting like they have security pins in them. Somebody around here once told me that sometimes the pins are so badly cut from whatever stock that they"re made from that they have grooves in them that could do that, but anyways... I"d go try a master #3 or something, they"re usually a little bit harder than the targhetto ones.

I believe that Magnum and Fortress are manufactured by Master.
