Safety pins, Whats makes them harder?

Postby Dak » 30 May 2008 13:21

I am talking about spool pins in particular. I ask because I am looking to move up to locks with security pins, but I would like to know what makes them harder.

Spool pins are more difficult because they allow the plug to partially spin. When this happens, the bottom of the spool can't be lifted to the sheer line.

When the top part of the spool pin drops below the sheer line, the plug turns. This is what is known as a false set because the plug turns in an attempt to fool you into thinking that the particular pin you were working on is set properly. You should be able to push it up a little bit more and as you do that, you will notice that the plug turns backwards a bit to the upright position. When this happens, let push the plug back. Eventually, the pin will rise up to the correct position, with the driver pin above the sheer line and it will set properly. It is not uncommon for other pins to fall back into the plug while setting a spool pin properly. So, you may have to re-pick these. Have fun and

The material of course ( intermolecular bonds,) so brass pins are softer than steel pins.
