I think I've got locks without security pins sussed!!!

I can now pick "Bird" cylinders (Pickers in the UK will no doubt be very familiar with these cylinders) they're found on the cheapest nightlatches.

I can also pick the cheap (normally laminated) padlocks you buy from B & Q and the like.

My local locksmiths gave me this cylinder to play with next........



My query comes in two parts really.

Does this lock probably contain security pins of some sort? I'm struggling with this a bit the same way as I did with my original lock ( A master 160).

Secondly when a manufacturer is making locks, do they tend to put the security pins in the same holes or do they differ? If they don't differ, which pins should I be looking out for?

Incidentally the little vice the lock is in could be my best lockpicking purchase so far. Got it off Ebay!

i think there are 2 but your best off stripping it right down and having a play with it yourself. if you can, take pics of every step and you can make up your own little log

I am told ERA do 2 levels, the cheap ones with no security pins and the version with security pins (Spools om this case). I am also told they look identical.

I have no idea which pins they use spools in but I would asume they use the same pin stacks each time. Take use 2 and 4 in there rim cylinders but ERA could use different ones.

The spools are very easy to identify

usually to pick this kind off lock, i start raking, once the plug rotate a bit, i already know some of the pins are set, only one or a few spools block the plug,
to identify them, is very easy you need apply a low tension on tension wrench and you manipulate pins one by one, when you have a spool, you feel a reaction in the tension wrench, all you have to do is start pushing the pin, your plug will start go back and when you reach the shear line your plug will rotate again, you have make this to all spool pins.

Apart from the top end lock manufacturers all this kind of thing will be mass produced the only thing changing being the key pins. If the spools are in spot 2 and 4 for this lock they will be for all such lock.

Most likely being 2 and 4 or 1 3 5.
