Counter Torsion

Postby _ » 15 Jun 2008 23:47

So I've noticed that locks with spring-loaded plugs are easier to pick because you're able to more easily apply variable torsion. I have more trouble with locks without this feature because lessening tension for spool pins usually lets more pins drop than I would like. This may be a silly question, but do locksmiths ever use counter-torsion tools to simulate a spring-load plug?

The trick here is to use a wrench which fits snugly in the keyway. I.E. one that won't slip if you apply very slight counter-tension.

I do it quite often when I think I've set one or more pin stacks up too high. I'll let off of the tension to let a couple stacks drop back down and then start picking again slowly and more carefully.
If a lock is a puzzle, then its key is the complete picture

what lock

Postby raimundo » 16 Jun 2008 6:21

what are the brand names of these locks that have this counter torsion that you are picking. I know of a few such locks but they have other difficulties built in that are the real problem,

I would be intereseted in knowing which locks brands you are specifically refering to.

I bought an Ace brand deadbolt from Ace hardware ($9.99 on sale). I took it apart and repinned it. It was easy with 0, 2, and 3 spools, so I put in 5 and have only gotten it once. Part of my problem is that my homemade pick is too flimsy (ground off a little too much steel; I'm gonna by South Ord. ones soon), but my other problem is that I let too many pins drop when I lessen torsion.
