Peterson Government Elite 1: Just purchased

When it comes down to it there is nothing better than manual tools for your Lock pick Set, whether they be retail, homebrew, macgyver style. DIY'ers look here.

Peterson Government Elite 1: Just purchased

Postby David_Parker » 22 Jun 2008 11:00

Just picked up my Peterson Government Elite 1 at ALOA yesterday....trade items are sooo expensive! I wish everyone would just come down on price.

Hopefully more to come.

I hear you man. I'm having to buy so many tools that I haven't really been able to save up for anything this whole year except for more tools.

I have an honest I'm-a-hobbyist-and-you're-a-pro kinda question. Not a cut on those tools at ALL, hell I am still using the southern specialties set I got at Defcon 15.

Ate those picks really better than the homebrews?

If so, why?

Good question, and thanks for the pro compliment, although if you knew me, I'd think we would be disagree.....anyways, to answer your question: No. Not really. Raimundos, or LockNewb any of their products would definately give these companies a scare in quality, its just something I've always wanted, and as someone who loves to pick, I'm always on the look out for different handles and sets. I really like Petersons Reach, but I'm looking forward to the Gem. Most of the time, I only use three picks. Rake, Half-Diamond, and a homebrew Reach. Odds are I won't use really any of the the others. But I wanted a nice Peterson set, cause I'm a slut for picks and tools, and I like the U-Bend-It Tool (although the steel snapped when I first used it, something that they advertise that won't happen) and the SFIC wrenchs, (which need to be redesigned if anybodys intrested, not in the teething, but the angle of the wrench).

Its like my Falle-Safe set. I paid about $400 from MBA, and I never touch the thing. But its a toy, and I like it. I don't often buy these things, but when something like ALOA comes to your home city, and you get to go for free, you tend to buy stupid stuff. Most of the time, I'm buying essential things for the job. I almost paid $110 for a set of awesome drill bits by Mad Dog, but the set I wanted only went up to 1 1/8".

Stick with your homebrew or the company you've got. I personally stick with HPC. Not because they're awesome, or great, or the best, but because I can replace them easily, they've been some of the first picks I've ever used which means I used to them, and they work.

I am a tool geek too. I understand what you were saying. I am disappointed that the tools are so hard to get for hobbiests. Peterson tools are practically impossible to get unless you are a locksmith, as are many others.

Also interesting to hear that the quality isn't that much better. I somehow didn't think it would be.

Thanks for the reply!

The demonstration on the mad dog bits at ALOA was pretty impressive, good looking tools for sure.

Nice set, now I'm not one to judge, but I've heard bad things about those black rubber Peterson handles, that the feedback is drastically reduced.

I'd love to know if this is only a rumor, because I'm interested in getting some Peterson picks soon, and I'm wondering if it really does affect feedback that much.

All help is greatly appreciated :D

I don't find that it affects it that much.

But strange you say that, with all of the peterson hooks including the gem.
I can barely feel anything inside of the lock. I dont know if its because of the design but on the hooks i barely get any feedback so i normally stay away from them. The reach has great feedback, so does the diamond. Maybe its just my set but overall the peterson handles are great, though after long picking sessions they make your fingers pretty raw from the rubber rubbing against your skin all the time. But still far more comfy then alot of picks i've tried.

I really like peterson picks. I find that the rubber picks don't give you quite as much feedback as the plastic handles, which are slightly cheaper, and I find work better. I do like the rubber picks as well.

I've never gotten the government steel models, however. How are they? they are considerably more expensive as I recall. Is it worth it compared to the regular spring steel?

I'm surprised to hear that the price you paid was higher than their website price. I was at the Yankee Security Expo in Sturbridge MA last Fall and their booth prices were the same as the website. But I guess this is ALOA, so it wouldn't be too surprising to see impulse items priced accordingly to a convention setting. Was it $185 or more?

Thanks

I bought two E4 sets for the shop (one of which is in the Buy Sell right now, hint hint :D )... Let me tell you something....

I have had my set for only about 2 years, used for hours a day, and I have never broken a single pick. The metal they are using is top notch. I have no doubt that when I am on Floor 5 and all my tools are on the ground floor (the only thing with me is my pickset), that I can use a pick to push down a few retainers and disassemble some locks without fear of breaking it. These picks are STRONG.

The people who say feedback is reduced.... Might be right. "Drastically" reduced... Hell no. When your JOB involves holding these things for hours at a time, you will gladly trade a tiny percentage of tactile feedback for a handle you can use all day without developing blisters.

Even the leather case just screams quality. Honestly though, skip the bypass tools. They work... but aren't worth the extra cash. If I buy another set, it will be the one without the bypass tools.
