Antique ish locks. Help me figure them out please

Hi everyone. im new here.

ok. so my wife has purchased 2 chests. one steamer trunk and the other that looks like it came over on the Bounty. id dearly like to make a key for the Bounty chest and i dearly need to make one for the steamer (it got locked with my stuff inside of it). If anyone can identify the type of lock in each or has some idea how to make a key for the bounty or how to pick the steamer id be very grateful.

now some photos.

cool task

the method would be impressioning, there should be some info available via the search function
(or http://www.google.com/ and
site:lockpicking101.com
plus search term, i.e something like this)

about impressioning warded and/or lever locks.

The steamer box looks like a warded lock, so some type of bent steel wire should work as well?

Good luck and let us know how it works out!

Cheers,
mh

The first one resembles the old ABUS No. 999 locks, and those were warded locks. All you need is a small key that fits and has a like a halfball end, because in the bottom of the lock thee probably is a small hole that the end of the key fits. It is designed so to support the key when turning it open. The key probably needs only one cut and that is the cut near the bow to let the key turn (the casing of the lock acts as a key retaining feature).

The second lock probably is a one-lever lock, meaning it is basically a warded lock too, but the key lifts the locking lever and throws the bolt. Pretty usual design in old chests.

There was a chest using the exact same type of lock as the first picture at the shop I work at. My boss impressioned it open with a luggage key. I'll try to find out what the blank number is when I go to work tomorrow.

Svaroh, that 'cut' is often referred to the 'throat' of the key. Common on safety deposit keys. (If you didn't know)

Is the # on the steamer lock 5952?

If so, we have a key here in the shop.

The lower one I'd find a blank that fits, then smoke it to make it black.
Then insert, turn to first contact and remove. File on the mark/s a bit at a time and continue so until you have a working key.
Some skill and luck required.

i dont suppose you'd be willing to scan the key for the steamer with a ruler, im pretty good at making stuff so i dont imagine id have difficulty reproducing one. i could paypal you a fee if you'd find that enticing. that would make my day. and today is the anniversary of my birth :)
