Why are "high security" locks uncommon in the US

Because thieves kick , pry, and break to get in. Thieves don't pick locks.

A $10 defiant provides the same security on most front doors as an M3.

I agree with you here, To many people think just buying an expensive lock will make everything ok. That won't make up for their hollow door and misaligned strike plate. The first thing people need to look at is their door, you just can't polish a turd.

and after the door, they need to examine the door frame. In modern construction, this can be very weak. If I were designing one with secureing it in mind, I would find a way to put springs on the whole door frame so that percussive attacks can become a seriously tireing exercize. the springs would allow some give at high pressure and then simply reset it the inch or so that it has to move, it could be designed well enough that no wedge blocking could be inserted at full stroke to prevent kick back. the frame would be immobile under normal conditions, as the springs would be numerous and multi placed to make attacking the springs a very large job.
