Master #130

i just started reading about picking last night on this site while browsing, i took a clip from a pen and fashioned a t/w, then put a 45* bend at the end of a nappy pin. I picked up the first padlock in the house put them in and bang within 10 seconds it was open, was i chuffed! i could really get into this i thought then i picked up the other padlock the master 130 and am now wondering with the 140 having safety pins does this one too? its a hell of a lot harder i can feel pins setting but am unsure wether there false set or not complete newb 1st day any help thanks :D

Here is a thread about the pins in paster locks:

viewtopic.php?t=23712

The 130 isn't on that initial list, but since the 121 has them, and the 140 has them, I would imagine that the 130 has them. Probably 2 spool pins.

I would advise that you get a Kwikset cylinder and do DB's beginner exercises in the General section.

You should also get a set of real picks if you don't have them. Here's a good starting point. Even a small four piece set is better than makeshift tools if you're starting out. Otherwise you may frustrate yourself away from the hobby.

I think you should be getting him to buy them off our sponsor

Lockpickshop has some great deals, and with the discount LP101 members get, it's worthwhile.

The standard sets you buy from them are SouthOrd anyway.
Only thing I have to say is shipping is high if you're not in the states, so order more than just the basics, even if you don't think you'll need them.
But if you are in the states, I wouldn't worry about it.

Hope it helps,

The 130, 140, 150 Masterlocks are all basically the same except for their size. So, the reason you are getting frustrated is because your 130 has a spool or two and probably a serrated pin. I've taken a couple 140's apart and never found a regular pin, although I hear they can have them. Hope this helps.

The only picks I had for the first few months were my short hook, snake rake, and half diamond. I ditched my saftey pin the second I had a hacksaw blade, and I would suggest you do the same. One blade can make three picks, and if you don't feel ambitious enough for the snake, a half snowman, or standard ball can work in place I would think. The main problem I had when I was just starting was I never seemed to have the right tension wrench. I have always hated the hacksaw blade kind, and I busted up a few over tensioning them with my hex key homemade lock busting tensioner. Wiper blades are great for tensioners. Street cleaner bristles are on this site alot too, but my town uses nylon ones, so I couldn't say anything about them.

So, hook, half diamond, then snake or equivalent, and a few tension wrenches. There are posts about this all over this site. Seek them out if you still feel unfulfilled. If you don't know what size you want your tools or are just curious there is a sticky thread in the manual lockpicks section with pick templates. I could post the link, but I'm sure you can find it without my help. Peace out.
