Anybody know what a convenience key is?

I think I've heard the term used for keys for locks that aren't really for security, like the exterior override key for a residential bathroom door (which is usually just a wire you stick in the keyhole that unlocks the door).

I've heard the term used for a key that's left in a residential lockbox (e.g., for your kids to use when they get home from school)... but I'm not sure if that's the proper, general use?

I think it may be a reference to the RADAR keys available for public conveniences.

I first heard the term convenience key in about 1964 when Ford began its new double sided key. It was convenient because it could be inserted either way. Since then many other manufacturers have produced wafer locks with double sided keys that are convenience keys and not true double sided keys.

I agree with Raymond
... the orginal ford double sided key only had tumblers on 1 side of the keyway ... ie the key would work if properly when inserted ( properly) into the lock even if only cut on one side.

Isn't a convenience key one that you remembered to bring with you.... or one that glows in the dark when you are trying to find it after a long night at the bar?

Oh wait, I'm sorry those would be CONVENIENT keys!
