Making a tubular pick; update 2

Ok ok.. Bobby pins are the trick, broke down and went to the drug store and picked up a pack.. Will have results posted soon, they still need to be thinned and such.

Its finished, now I guess I have some tuning to do on it and a lot of trial and error stuff.

Here is the finished picture less the handle, I have yet to turn a handle for it.

Added a handle from a screwdriver.. heated the screwdriver and pulled the metal shaft from the handle and turned down the handle part of the tool to fit snug - heated it and inserted. Came out decent too IMO..

Now does it work??

just wondering, how does the lil knob on the collet keep from sliding off? friction alone? and yes the handle looks awesome =D from what i've seen those things are usually threaded are they not?

A lot more refining I think but possibly. It took so much BS to make although now I know what and what not to do so its easier to make a second. I usually do make seconds because they always come out much better. I am leaving in a few hours to go and pick up a lock to start tinkering - will it work?? I have no clue how to use it really, thats why I wanted to manually pick one first to get the feel of the lock.

The way the tapering is, its not coming off once you push it up onto the collett, its on there. I am most likely going to thread the next one. The problem is once its lose these pins move too easy, I added an o-ring to prevent slipping of the pins.

I have never handled one of these though, I just made this off a picture and made some modifications of my own. I have no idea how it should feel, how the pins should move etc..

Have you thought about threading the ring and collet? That way you could tighten it to make the pins harder to move and loosen it to make them easier to move. That's the way most of the commercial ones work.

A MAXNC CNC Mill. i read a bit on using hacksaw blades to cut the slots, I cant imagine what a pain that can be. If I were you I would start looking for something already made.

I was considering making the tube smaller then it needed to be and rolling JB Weld around it, pressing the pins into the JB weld(lubed of course) and removing them before hardening. all you need to do is sand down to the diameter you need with out removing the ways you pressed.

JB weld is like metal when hard and can be drilled, machined, etc.
Its your friend.
