I Issue a Pick making Challenge!

When it comes down to it there is nothing better than manual tools for your Lock pick Set, whether they be retail, homebrew, macgyver style. DIY'ers look here.

I Issue a Pick making Challenge!

Postby LockNewbie21 » 10 Jul 2008 15:41

 Catchy title ehh?

Anyway, I have been not making sets lately (obviously), concentrating on this schalge primus deal myself and a few members are doing, and other stuff called life has gotten me where I just need some creative work bench time.

I did this a few months.. or years who knows ago, but now theres more intrest in crafting picks now then, then.

So would you guys be interested in a "one" pick compitetion? It can be any one pick made anyway but you have to go all out, and try your very best and make it shine baby. 8)

Winner is chosen buy a poll that includes the forum?

I think the comp. would motivate the pick makers to outdue them selves on one pick and make something really special and put together a thread of homemade tools other forums and websites wil marvel at... or not lol.

Soooooo, anyone accept this Challenge! :)

If so then say so and we can get a competion going.

yeah i'm up for a bit of competition.

just a few questions:

1) Are the any rules e.g about materials, does it have to be a pick or can it be a picking device?

2) What will happen at the end of the competition?

3) Is there a time restriction e.g a week to make and post it on here.

4) Would there be a prizes for 1st,2nd and 3rd place winners.

i got a few ideas already :)

Is it one pick or can it be one tool (double sided pick)?

We'll happily do a feature on the competition in NDE, photos and credits of every pick will make it into the mag, with interviews / instructables from the top places.

...I have not discussed this with the rest of the staff... :P but we have often discussed devoting a few articles to the home brew scene. This could definitely be a good opportunity.

I'm down.
Should we all make one type of pick do that it is a more equal judging ground? e.g. It will make a more level comparison if we all make the same pick head.

It is not enough that I suceed...All my friends must fail as well!

I just had a great idea!!! Or so I think :)
How about after the comp we can take all the picks and auction them for Zeke? It would do the LS community good to have a competition in the name of charity to help out such a pioneer.
Say, final post date for picks would be end of month, then voting would be from August 1'st - 5'th Then auction would begin and end before Defcon.Does that sound good? Just trying to visulize the time frame here.
Wow I'm getting pretty hyped to see all the picks! Can't wait to see this competition get started.

I'm in. This will be the first pick that I make, but it'll give me the motivation to try my best.

Thats a Top Idea well thought mate.

As for rules lets put it like this.

1. Any manual pick, double sided, single, hook, rake, doesn't matter. What ever pick you would like.

2. It doesn't matter what skill level or ammount of tools, just give it a go, theres nothing more rewarding than making something that owns a lock.

3. I say for deadlines and such, Skyuler mentioned a spot in NDE, so if he would like I would say let him make up a time frame.

4. After all is said and done, we have a dedicated thread where you post your pictures.

Over all I just think it would rock to see people from all skill levels and diffrent tastes come out in there tools. And the selling them for Nick is a heck of a great idea as well.

So what say you gents?

As noted, I too have not made any picks or tools in quite a while. However, this idea has come up in the past and I honestly don't know what happened with that one.

But, i'm willing to make an exception with my busy schedule. So lets get something figured out regarding time (for my sake) and see what we see.

I say you just made my day. Hopefully I can think up something really cool to add to the list for an honorable mention. At the very least it'll be shiny.

Sounds great, but I suggest no ludicrously huge jackknive's. 30 picks bolted together isn't 1 pick. It's a full set. Not that I'm opposed to the idea of cool designs for the jackknife, but huge feeler pick sets seem a little excessive. Maybe limit it to 3 or 5 for the style.
