Hi i'm new ...

yeah i've just sorta .. registered here and ... ... yeah

well .. ...

i'm only really interested in lock picking for emergency uses .
aka - i lock myself out, etc .

but it seems to me that bumping would be a bit more convenient ...

because if i was just bumping all i'd need was a 999 key - as with here i need ... a lockpick and an allan wrench

i just consider the ability to pick locks and bump doors ... to be a good skill to have so i'm naturally interested

and i was trying to get a masterlock earlier with a combo grind and ... ... i get the feeling picking locks is considerably easier .
had to use magic numbers etc, then even at the end with all of the calculations i still had to try 80 combos ... less than 64k but still ... i'd probably just look and it and cut it instead of doing all that work ..

so ... .. should i just keep a 999key on my keychain and start practicing picking anyway ?

thanks -

oh .. and i cant find the edit button

so i'd just say that i have done a few locks before but without actually picking the lock

i'd just slide my knife down the crack of the door

find where the latch it and push down until i had control of it, then slide it out .

works rather well but its not nearly as accesible as actually picking the lock - mostly because it will only work if the crack is big enough, and the door has to open towards you ... and it doesnt work on deadbolts

so you're gonna keep a 999 key on your keychain.. and when you get locked out, that 99 key will be inside the house behind a locked door, that wont do much good. and i hope you realize that a bump key isnt going to fit into every lock you walk up, and.. how are you going to actually use the bump key, you'll need to carry your bump hammer on your keychain as well. That reminds me to the side of the road gas station bathrooms, where the keychain is attached to a large wooded board or a metal soup ladle or something that will remind you to not loose those keys.

I'm sure that somewhere you read that you can turn an allen wrench into a tension wrench, but its cheaper and faster to just buy a basic Southord pick set which includes a tension wrench.

read more posts here. in fact, read all of them, thats a great way of understanding this hobby.

... i've only readup about these -
the only actual " picking " i've done is with a knife

and if somebody else locked theirself out etc, as long as their door wasnt made out of glass i think i could see myself bumping in...

i need a special bump hammer? sorry if i sound dumb ..

and i said allan wrench because i couldnt remember the name .. " tension wrench "

and if i did lock myself out, i get the feeling i'd lose my tension wrench + pick before i forgot my keys ...

For emergencies, call a locksmith. For fear of losing your own key, get a duplicate done and store it in your wallet.

From your first post I don't get good vibes at all...whose door are you going to bump or shim?

Sometimes we discuss bump keys, but this isn't lockbumping101, it's lockpicking101. Read some of the stickies for more info.
