I probably already know the answer to this but here goes.....

I recently started a new job and I am incharge of the cash box. There is only some change in it right now and we think the moron before me left with the keys; that or they're IN the box. No one can get in touch with this guy to find out. Can anyone tell me how to pick the lock on a cheapie beige cash box? there is no makers seal or anything on it so I can't really tell the brand. It wouldn't be a big deal but I have an envelope with cash just sitting at my desk and it kind of makes me nervous. Thanks!

umm, prolly not the best question to ask right off the bat for a first post =( especially when dealing with cash, it'd prolly be best to have your work call a professional locksmith to open it for you if you can't get a hold of him.

Given the locking mechanism on most cash boxes, it is highly unlikely that the keys are locked inside. (It's possible with some models -- but the lids on most cannot be closed if the lock is in the "locked" position.)

Unfortunately, beyond that, you'll find that people here aren't going to be able to help you much. On a practical side, we don't really have enough information to know what type of lock you're talking about. Aside from that, though, instructions for opening safes, cash boxes, cash registers, etc., simply aren't discussed on the "public" sections of this site... there's simply too much risk of someone using the information inappropriately.

I hope you understand the rationale... and, if you're interested in picking up an interesting new hobby, that you hang around, read a bunch, and start to explore hobby lockpicking. :)

Even if you were to open the box you still would not be able to use it because you don't have the key. So for it to still be usable you would either need to get the keys back, or get the lock on the box changed by a locksmith.

Either way i think your best bet would be to take it in to a locksmith, have them open it, and give you a new key for the box if its possible for the lock to be rekeyed.

Good luck.
