Help with a BEST lock

Postby ady1989 » 17 Aug 2008 3:50

Ok my friend's dad gave me a padlock to play around with after I showed him how easy it is to pick a house lock. Please let me know what the heck this is! I have a feeling this is way beyond my skill level, I cant get it open for the life of me.

This will give you an idea of what is going on inside that lock. Good luck.

That thing is awesome. I've never seen that model SFIC padlock.

Thanks for the info. Hmm ok so it probably has no security pins (thankfully, it's a really stiff lock and maintaining light pressure is hard). I just need to make sure I set the pins to the operating line not the control line...I'm gonna WD40 this baby and I'll mess with it till I open it. Wish me luck!

I did it! I owned that friggin lock! I got the hang of it and I can open it in a few minutes but it's not very consistent. I gotta say this thing was quite tricky.

It's a Best shrouded shackle padlock. Have 2 of them. Don't want to drop it on your foot! Made to prevent the use of bolt cutters(like your gonna cut a 1/2" thick shackle with one). See you got it open. Good job!

It's what's called a "dual-purpose" padlock.

It's main use is to secure things, the shrouds stop bolt cutters (as said above) and also slow someone trying to cut the lock with a rotary tool like a dremel.

The second use for this lock is as a weapon. If you want to take a more 'hands on' approach to defending your property, you can use it like a weighted blunt weapon to defend against any would-be robbers.

Of course, if you take out the core it goes from dual-purpose to only duel-purpose.

So, it says Best A1, but this doesn't look like any A keyway to me. Do you know if they changed the inner core and left the original sleeve on it?

Also, great job! It took me a few weeks to pick my first Best with standard tools. You got it in a day... thanks for making me feel like a total jerk.

Haha I bet you could bust someone's head clean open with this thing! A pack of smokes later and an almost sleepless night, I have a feeling I got lucky when I opened it. I can't seem to get it right again. Maybe if I recreate the setting when it happened, which would be my morning dump...

I don't know about any one else but usually if I apply heavy tension on SFIC locks I can pick it at the control shearline maybe 50% to 60% of the time which is what I prefer to have happen cos then you can also remove the core and service or decode the lock if the need be.
If a lock is a puzzle, then its key is the complete picture

My guess is the markings have something to do with which keys in a mastering system will open it.

That sounds reasonable, and it explains why the keyway is a restricted type key profile.

If that's true then it is wierd how I have A1 and a B2 marked locks that are A and B keyways. This could be explained away by which key is the operating key for a certain lock, and it's number in the system. I guess...
