It has come down recently, by about 25c. That will help
The fuel price is now about R10.40 per liter. This does have an impact on the bottom price and what the customer does not realize is that fuel has gone up. They will pay more for commodities. We had a client today that actually got furious with us because of price increases. Funny thing is we only increase our prices once a year. And thats about 5-7%.
We are alway told that when there's an increase in petrol prices, the effect will alway be felt in about 3 months time. Guess we're in for a bumpy ride.

Does that include any labor?
I charge $55 including 1st half hour labor. (labor @ $60/hr)

$60/hour same as you. If I get a call actually in my town i usually only charge $35 for a service call. My town is less than a mile wide. Auto lockouts are not $35 however.

I charge flat rates, sometimes I'm slower and sometimes I'm faster so thats only fair.
I charge $35 for a lockout. The going rate here is $45, so I'm less expensive :)
If its a re-key, then I charge a $20 minimum plus $5 per lock. I don't know what the others charge for a re-key, but I'm told I'm cheaper.

No trip charge is bull...everyone has to make their money one way or another....It's just like the places that advertise that they do not have higher after hours prices, that is usually because their business hour prices are as high as most peoples after hours price.
When people try to talk down the price, I always smile and say, 'If I could come down, then that means I am charging too much to begin with.'
As far a pop a lock goes...I am sure some of their people are good, but a few years back we went to unlock a kia that took a minute that they were working on for a couple hours.
People are always happy and very grateful when you unlock a vehicle with their child in it. Funny story, I went to unlock a car with a child in it, driving down the street I was fixed on one side of the street know that the address was an even, and that was the side was evens. Found the address, an apartment with 4 units, pulled up the driveway(inclined) around back, and found no one. Backing down the driveway in my rearview I saw a car in the yard across the street with people huddled around. On my way there the child put the car in neutral. A minute or two later it was open. There was the guy there with his dime store opening tools, saying well if I knew I had to use that tool... I could not get to the drivers side as it was about 6 inches from the house, and you could only open the passenger door about a foot and a half due to a curb.
Our prices are 35 service call in the city 40 for suburbs just outside the city. 8.75 a rekey if you have the key, 10.75 if not. Occasionally we may charge a few bucks labor if the lock has alot of dissassembly i.e. panic bars, mall gates or if circumstances require extra time. You know the big buildings that you spend more time walking around than actually rekeying.
We only charge an additional 5 for lockout on top of the service call...unless know it may possibly be trouble like a deadlocked bmw...or more if there is an increased liability like high end cars, bmw, mercedes, rovers, etc.
So many tools out there to be bought by locksmiths....the trick is to know what to buy.

What?!? No Labor?
I charge $10.00 per key hole + labor to remove and refit and include the first 3 keys (+ call out, of course)

Again! what about labor?
what is your hourly rate?
Having worked for multiple companies the world over, this is the first time I have ever seen or heard of companies not charging for labor on top of keying.
If you charge $60 per hour and it takes 6 minutes to rekey a cylinder, not including remove and refit.....you are losing money at $8.75 per cylinder.
NEVER ever discount your labor.....certainly discount parts if you want....but people are paying you for your labor skills.
Dont you value your skills in this skilled trade higher?

My prices went up. I now charge $14 a cylinder, and a $20 call out fee.
If the people are nice enough to bring the lock to me off their door, then I only charge them $10 to re-key.
What do you guys charge to master key a building?

we charge 60 an hour...like I said, we do not charge labor for rekeying knobs or deadbolts other than the rekey.
