safety deposit boxes

Postby dollnga » 29 Jul 2004 2:45

Hi, I have a question ....Will a safety deposit box key turn if you should accidentially stick it in the wrong box? It is a long story but I really need help with this one. My uncle recently passed away. He gave me a key to his safety deposit box many yrs ago. I do not know which bank. I thought I had found the right bank. My key went it and turn all the way except for maybe 1/18 of an inch. The key is bent just a little. If this wasn't the correct box would the key have turned that much? I am desparately searching for an answer.....I need to find his Will and get it probated. Please help!

If the key turns, then 99.7331% it is the correct key with the correct lock.

NO, it will turn. Safety deposit boxes utilize a special type of lever lock. Insert pretty much any key of the correct keyblank and it WILL turn, just not all the way to unlock.

Capt is correct. Safety deposit boxes will turn quite a bit even if the wrong key is inserted. Also in most banks you'll need to have somone put their guard key in and turn it as well (two key holes) this is because of the set up of the lock...

Code: Select all
--------
[      ]__>>       ___>>
[      ]  >>          >>       <the guard key raises these levers
--------
^bolt    ^your key
           raises these levers

(the >> things represent the lever stacks)
Sorry about the horrible drawing... but hopefully you get the idea. Your key raises the levers so the bolt can retract, but it can't retract until the guard key as been turned and raises another set of levers.

:x

Fine... let me try again.

Code: Select all
 __________                  ______
/          |    _____       |      \
|          |   |      \     |      /
|          |== >      /  == >_/\__/
|          |   |_/\__/
\__________|

Ha! Now you can sorta see the levers... sorta...

nope you won't get that last 10 degtees required to retract the bo;lt if it ain't the right key.

put the guard key and pull the other lock with a dent puller.

push the levers out of the way and scratch back the bolt

I've never used a safe deposit box in a bank - but I'd be a bit wary about leaving anything of value in the sort of bank which let the guard use his key whilst the "customer" turns up with a dent puller.

If anybody has anything of real value (gems, jewellery, large amounts of cash, vintage copies of "Playboy"). I've got a garden shed available for hire - you can have the only key for the warded rim lock for complete "peace of mind"!

Just a thought, once the rental fee for the box comes due, wont they try and contact the deceased?

Safety deposit boxes are VERY safe and secure. There is pretty much nothing that I would not trust with one of those. And FYI- it's illegal to store cash in a safety deposit box (although they never check what's in them so unless it smells really bad you could probobly keep anything you wanted in there).
