Regarding classes for locksmithing

Having a vested interest in Locksmithing, what college courses would you suggest I take to pursue a career in Locksmithing?

I know I will take some electronics and alot of math...but what classes?

What type of college are you attending? For the most part, the kind of information you need to learn for skilled trades is not the kind of thing you'll be getting taught in college. If you're at a regular 4-year university, I'd suggest taking as many mechanical engineering and/or industrial design classes as possible (the latter of those two usually includes a fair amount of shop time for fabricating prototypes and whatnot). The more exposure you can get to machining, the better off you'll likely be, and at a 4-year university that is probably the closest overlap you'll get to learning about locksmith-related skills.

My sugestion would be to apprentice for an existing Reputible Locksmith company. They will train you a little bit at a time till you are ready. If you have thoughts of taking a few courses and opening up on your own, that may not work out any more. A few Canadian Provinces have taken initiatives preventing non Journeyman Locksmiths from owning businesses. Legislation and licencing is now on the way in the US as well.

Take my advise. Don't waste your money on Locksmith coarses in this trade until you are actualy working some where. Your will help you and you can make money while learning instead of spending money that may not qualify you for anything.

Better yet become an Electrician or get into a real trade. This one is not for real.

Take it from a real 40 year vetran Locksmith.

I like the cut of yer jib on this one Moose. I agree with you hear. I don't think much of study at home courses. The best place to learn is on the job from guys who know their stuff. Get paid to learn, good idea.
