buying a rekeyable lock

Postby Teus » 2 Aug 2004 8:41

Hi there. I'm new here, I'm new to picking and I would like to learn it. I've got some cheap padlocks here and I manage to pick them by luck, but I don't feel I'll get anywhere like this. I want to buy a rekeyable lock, but in a big DIY store they didn't have those kind of locks

guess I'll have to ask a locksmith, but what do I have to tell him? someone should provide me everything I need to tell him in order to get my hands on a rekeyable lock without arousing suspicion.
- should I take a cilinder or a padlock, and what specifications do they have to be?
- why would I need a rekeyable lock, and not a regular one? do I need multiple keys?
- how do I get things like mushrooms pins if they don't come with the lock?

cheap standard euro cylinders are rekeyable
As for how to rekey those search for euro cylinder rekey
diy stores or bigger general stores usually have them.

I'll have a look at another DIY shop, thanks. are you talking about standard "Euro" locks or about standard European locks?

I've had a standard 10?, 60mm lockin my hands today, and it had to be filed open to be rekeyed

euro profile cylinder with o-rings on both sides of the middle thing that moves when you turn the key.

There are locks without o-rings (usually more expensive ones) and locks with a ring without gaps, easiest are those with an open o-ring which you can open with pliers designed for the purpose (or with disused nail scissors - make sure not to hurt yourself)

it worked well with the cheap lock. opening up the o-rings was no problem, but rekeying is very difficult. Just bought an abus C 98 lock. it's with o-rings and they have a small hole in it, how do I open it up?

If you want something that is really easy to re-key,re-core (if you punk'd it) or whatever, buy a series 1205 American Lock. I find those easiest to play with.
