Have you ever Picked a Lock in an Emergency?

Have you ever needed to pick a lock when you've lost your keys, locked yourself out etc?

I had a friend lock himself out. Unfortunately, while I knew the theory of lock picking at that point, I had never picked a lock, or even tried. We ended up shoving his little brother through a window

Today I had a six month old locked in a house and her mom was on the outside.

There is a funny story about the Powers That Be at a DefCon, locked out of their storage room by the hotel staff. they spent a half hour standing outside the storage room - with thousands of dollars if THEIR equipment locked inside - debating the merits of opening the door to the closet without permission.

About 100 hung-over attendees were waiting for them to get started. I don't know if that qualifies as an emergency or not.

Anyway, I think someone eventually picked the lock. Just a little wafer lock - probably took 10 seconds. But we say over and over - don't pick a lock you don't own ... don't pick a lock in use ... don't pick a lock without permission. Still sure is funny to see lock pickers locked out of their own storage cabinet.

I got sent over to one of our apartment complexes ,by one of the managers at corp. - they didn't want the police destroying the door. It was a total rush - I posted the story here a year or two ago after it happened.

So... you lock yourself out multiple times... and the management does not have a duplicate of the key.... or did the tenant change the lock?

we try to keep all of our properties unmastered, due to past incidents with dishonest ex-employees - that means, you can find yourself with pockets full of keys somedays. Some of our complexes are very small with no onsite office, and duplicate keys are kept off site. It has always been one of those type situations. I'm in a unit doing some work, go to grab something I need, come back and have one of those, "Dangit!" moments. In the case of the warrant - it was a large older property that we had just taken over, and the key situation was a total disaster! We have it sorted out now, but initially, there were many missing, or mislabeled key tags.

Been on a couple of marshal evictions where we have the property manager and two cops looking over my shoulder while picking the locks on the door. Last one I did was on a commercial property where the door had two locks and two big Master padlocks on it. Got in in just a couple mins. All thanks to our Lock Sport training provided here.

And the countless "baby locked in the car at noon in the middle of July" type calls. I really hate those. If the life of the child is that important just break the window you heartless cheapskates.

I've locked myself out of places a few times, and had to pick my way back in. I've opened locks for friends and family when they were locked out, and I jiggled open a ford ranger at my school that the girl had locked her keys in with ignition still running.

Most of these don't really sound like emergencies. In a real emergency I use my size 12 steel-toe pick. It has GREAT feedback.

They're not, not really. Just a major inconvenience and some pain for your wallet. But in this economy I guess that can be an emergency.

You mean an emergency like opening a door to find out if someone is still alive? Yes I've done that last time was last sunday but I didn't have to open the door to answer the question about the occupants condtion. The smell kinda gave that away.

discovered a suicide in a garage a couple years ago... you never forget THAT smell!...
