Thoughts on a new lock design

Postby vryez2xlr8 » 2 Nov 2008 1:43

This is my first post to this forum except for the introduction although I have been a member for a few years. Now with that said...

I was thinking about a new design for a lock in my head and I'm sorry if it's been posted before, I tried to search for it, but I came up with nothing. But what if you had a lock with tumblers on top, bottom, left and right sides? Not so much in a circle like a tubular lock but more like a + looking entrance way. I have never seen a lock like this if one already exists I am not aware of it...and if it does, how does one use a tension wrench on it? or would you just have to make a different design for a wrench? and you could switch it up put a different type of tumbler on each side. That would suck trying to pick it and having to keep grabing a diffent pick while keeping tension. Probably be one ugly key, but an pain of a lock to pick...Just a thought in my head I was wondering what you thought about it...?

Wow guess someone had thought of the idea before me. Sorry I posted this in the wrong forum. I just figured an idea on a new lock would go in the locks section. So what's the deal with this type of lock? Is there a special tension wrench that you can buy or do you just have to create your own? Has anyone actually picked this? I'm guessing since it's an 18 pin lock that there is only one way to insert the key. It would bother me having to try the key 4 different ways before actually opening the lock. Thanks for the quick responses though. Great find.

Lips also makes a cruciform lock. The problem with these locks is as you would suspect, the more shearlines you create, the more tolerances are reduced and the easier picking becomes in many cases.
