Help with lock, please. (brute force)

Hi, I'm sorry that this is not really about "lock picking" but I still think that this group would be the best to ask.

My father has a storage locker and has lost both of his keys to get into it and cannot afford the 80$ charge for a locksmith. The lock looks just like the one pictured above that says "shop" and is of the brand name "Crown" if I remember correctly.



I was wondering if it is possible to somehow break the lock? Is it possible to drill through the keyhole or perhaps some other method... Any help would be great.

I've picked simple locks before but this is beyond me.

probably would be easier just to break the locker itself, large sledge hammer, or perhaps you may get lucky with wire clippers if the loop intowhich the padlock is locked is thin enough....

The lock is mostly covered by a "guard" that flips down over the lock to prevent using bolt cutters. The only visible part of the lock is the key hole and below. I would do more costly damage to the storage facility door with a sledge hammer than just hiring a locksmith.

If a locksmith is charging $80 for a lockout you need to find another locksmith. WAY Too expensive.

Most storage facilities are fully prepared to deal with this situation. After all, they frequently remove locks with bolt cutters whenever people quit paying the rental fees.

Simply run down to the office and tell them you need a lock cut.

As I said before, this facility has a guard over the lock to prevent using bolt cutters. Bolt cutters are something I own; and trust me, they are not getting anywhere near the lock, I've tried.

I've also asked the office for assistance and they have no way to help me except to call a locksmith. The guy at the office told me that the last 6 or so locksmiths charged the customers from 70-80$, I live in Canada so that is roughly 50$ US funds. If I can save that money for my father I'd really like to and if I had that money to give him I'd not be here asking for help.

So to clarify, bolt cutters are not going to work and the office will only do one thing, call a locksmith.

Thanks, for the help, sadly I am not sure when I will get to go there next, hopefully in the next couple of days.

However is drilling a good idea? (it was just the first thing I thought of) and does it have a decent chance of working? I would assume that if the pins get drilled out then eventually the thing will have to open. Starting off with a small diameter bit and working my way up to a larger one. Then again, assumptions are normally a bad idea.

Have any of you done this, What was your experience?

Maybe when/if I get around to it I will take some digi pics so you can all follow my impending doom.

go get a cheap angle grinder

if you try and drill it and screw up you are in for a world of pain

If you are not pressed for time, you could try a non-destructive method such as picking, or impressioning of course! If you need it open quick, you could use an angle grinder and then keep the cylinder and learn to pick it.. Then again you could also drill it, but then you ruin the lock entirely.

I would suggest the angle grinder before you just drill it and ruin the lock. Then you can cut the lock open and see how it works as well. Send us pics, of course! I have a diskus style lock, but I am not ready to cut it up yet cuz I use it to lock a toolbox.

Just my two cents, I have a biased opinion in favor of picking, though! (Who ever would have thought!? eh?)

Just a thought with the angle grinder, is there a power point nearby ?

The storage unit i used before had none available but a cordless drill is a definate option.

Hmmmm maybe could use a cordless dremmel cutting wheel ?

Yea, I am not sure if there is a power outlet anywhere in the facility or not. I do have both a corded Dremel and a cordless Dreamel... As well as corded and cordless drills. Seeing as how I don't want anyone to come by and think I am breaking in to someone else's unit I'd rather just get it done ASAP.

try rapping the lock
hit the bottom of the lock with a block of wood or a hammer while applying some tension with your tension wrench.your trynig to bump the pins up so hit the lock on the base upwards. it works a bit like a snap gun worth a go it wont distroy the lock
