Source for buying spring steel strips

Postby ufd538 » 21 Oct 2008 23:05

Unfortunately Smallparts.com no longer carries spring steel strips, and I need a place to buy from, so I can make tools. Most importantly would be my need for strips at least a half inch wide and around .032 thick. I use these to make wafer readers similar to the ones Peterson makes...but Peterson's $55 set is not an attractive price, especially since I have already lost 2 sets, after that I started making my own.

Anyways, if anyone knows another source for purchase...please let me know.
So many tools out there to be bought by locksmiths....the trick is to know what to buy.

When you get your new stock, make a tutorial on making the readers. :)

Any suggestions as to the flat shim stock or the rolled....of course the flat would be easier to work with, but the rolled is cheaper...6" x 25" flat is around $20, and 6" x 50" rolled around $28...how much harder is it to work with the rolled..

I dunno, let me know, I will prolly just get the flat in some .032, and maybe some .28 to make other things .

We had to replace a dull band saw blade a little while back. I believe that would make some very good picks or readers. It is very good steel.

I cant wait to see your tutorial on making the readers.
Nothing is foolproof to a talented fool. Wisdom is not just in determining how to do something, but also includes determining whether it should be done at all.
