Automotive Question

I have a 2006 Toyota Matrix. I was getting a key at the dealer and he told me there was a maximum of four keys per vehicle. Does this sound right ?

I thought you could clone an unlimited number of keys that would all be "the same".

toyotas do have a maximum amount of keys that can be programmed into the car, then you have reached you limit you can either re flash the ECU which erases all the keys, then start again or you can get the keys cloned, like with the Silca EH keys and you can have as many of these working becuase the car would recognize the cloned keys as all being the same, problem with the EH keys is the battery goes flat then you can't start your car but it will last a couple of years.

Depending on what chip is in the key you might be able to use a normal transponder key to clone on to, so say its a C4 or crypto (63 i think?, but you can tell by looking at the key) you need the EH keys, if its a T5 you have to code the keys before programming it into the car, so just give it the same code as an existing car.

i could be a little wrong because it has been a while since I have done any but I'm sure someone else here will know.

Does an 06 Toyota still use a 16 bit IC900 chip you need to re-flash? I just took a peek into the Ilco catalog and it says ECU needs to be replaced if no other master or original key is available. Thats kinda messed up. I would have thought an 06 would be using a 32 bit system.
If a lock is a puzzle, then its key is the complete picture

Well with out a master you wont be able to program any key into the car with on board programing, I'm pretty sure the 06 has the immobilizer that isn't integrated with the main ECU so if you do have to re flash it, it can be done with the AD100 or MVP, as for the cars with the integrated ECU's I was told by Advance Diagnostics that they are the only ones who could re flash them, but I'm sure that there is some tool that can do it.

The immobilizer for a 2006 Matrix is a type 67 Texas Crypto. It can be duplicated on a Silca EH2.
According to Silca , up to 10 keys can be programmed. But Toyota works with Master keys and Valet keys.

T5 can be cloned , there is no need to program them in the car.

But if you have lost all your keys and its a T5 chip, you still have to program the key to the car after you put a code on the key, its only if you are copying an exsisting key that you don't need to code it into the car because its a clone.

Indeed , but in the first post he mentioned a maximum off 4 keys. So , I'm assuming he still has the 4 others.

Actually , if he lost one of the 4 key programmed , it can be deleted from the car. And a new one programmed.

But , according to my sources , a maximum of 10 keys can be programmed in a Toyota Matrix.

Thanks for the offer. I think it would be wasted on me.

What we originally had was one used car with one key. I think a master. What we wanted was six keys in total for six different drivers that don't have to mess with getting their key to someone else. The car is a company car at a remote location. Whoever gets to use that car on that day would have a key. We have done this before with a couple of other cars and I thought it would be easy for this one too.

So the easiest would have been to clone five copies of the key we had. The dealer must not have offered "clone-able" blanks and he entered separate codes in the computer. (I think). We now have a lockie guy that has a brand new key programmer and he is going to fix us up with a clone or two so we have our six keys total.

thats right dealers don't offer the cloned keys, they are a silca EH blank, as for coding in genuine keys the procedure for doing it can be found on the net, if the lockie has a programmer that can erase the ECU then you can have the 6 genuine non cloned keys which I would recommend over the EH keys, just because when the battery in the key goes flat you cant start the car without replacing the battery, which is just a watch battery, good thing about the EH keys is that it is a lot cheaper and you don’t need the car only an original key.
