Old news. The MT5 was posted in the European locks forum a long time ago.

thats a beautiful piece of machanical enginering. what is the function of the alpha spring? you cant really tell in the video... i would assume the spring steel in the key is bent to a specific tension for the lock?

I won't pretend to know much of anything about the MT5, but often times the extra "features" they add to keys like that exist as much, if not more, for patent protection (and therefore unobtainable keyblanks) than for enhancing security. I've read about locks where manipulating the patentable features of the lock just served as the "open" button after the actual challenging parts of the cylinder were picked

In my mind, the MT5 is way too complicated, which will lead to mechanical failure under prolonged use or harsh conditions. They've just crammed too much stuff inside the same lock.

you would think so... my old job a a multilockon the front door... when i first started there was a malfuntion with the lock (at the time i had little intrest in locksmithing) but i was able to watch this guy disassemble it... wow! so meny parts compared to a standard pin tumbler... the M5 has ALOT more moving parts,

and what the heck does the alph spring do? what is its function?

has anyone picked it yet??

I don't know that any members have got their hands on one of these yet.

Honestly, the alpha spring just seems like a waste. I'm assuming every one of them pushes up the pin to the exact same distance and when that's figured out you might as well just drill a hole into a regular key and that's it. Side bar was a bit more interesting, but it's not the first lock to have one. While I can't even pick the classic mul-t-lock, I don't think the MT5 will be too difficult for the more experienced members on here.

Like someone else said previously, the alpha spring is simply for patent protection, as well as a "coolness" factor. I guess when you name parts of your lock with Greek letters, it makes your lock sound better.
