How do I know what way to turn the lock when picking??

When you use the key to a lock you own that is not in use, you apply a very small amount of tension in the same direction.

Padlocks usually unlock clockwise. Deadbolts unlock by turning away from the door frame (visualize that you're pulling the bolt out of the frame).

If you don't know what type of lock it is clockwise is usually a safe bet.

A method I use is to use the tension wrench and check which way the cylinder turns a fraction more easily.

All answers have been "correct"... What is "right" is a matter of preference though. You may find an instance where it is difficult or impossible to tension the direction you need because of circumstance. You may also find a lock that you can't pick one direction but doesn't give you any problems the other. In those cases, pick the direction that works to get the lock PICKED and then use a plug-spinner if it isn't the direction that actually unlocks the bolt.

I have read that a good way to know which way the lock turns, or which way to apply tension, is to try to turn the lock each way before picking. The lock should turn a little more the way that it is supposed to turn. When you turn the lock the wrong way it should stop sharply and turn very little that way.

I know that is confusing and I'm not the best person to explain it but maybe you can derive something from what I have said. I think what I said is correct. If not I am sure some expert on this forum will correct me.
