Starting with #3 master

So far I can pick the easy stuff like file cabinet and tool box locks with my home made picks. I ordered a set of picks today and I have several #3 master locks laying around. Would the master locks to much for a beginner? http://www.lockpickshop.com/MPXS-11.html This is what I ordered.
Misspelling's are on purpose........ I don't pick locks that are in use

Master #3 is the quintessential beginner's padlock, but I would recommend following the advice elsewhere on this site and going to a garage sale or a Restore and getting a deadbolt, learning about disassembly, and picking that. It's a much better learning tool.

well, someones going to say it, and bedsides it's good advice:

Don't pick locks that are in use. Murfies law says that the odds are 4 times greater of you screwing up and breaking the lock your picking if the lock is in use, and even if Murfy had died at birth, it's still a really risky thing to do.

so yah, go get a lockset and mess around with that. more informative, and a hell of a lot safer.

and at the original question: master locks are, as a rule, really bad and easy to pick.

goto walmart or target and buy a double deadbolt kwikset (or generic brand) for about 10-14$ double deadbolt gives you 2 locks for only a lil bit more than one. follow DB's exercise and you should be on your way to picking :)

i started with a master #3 and a kwikset deadbolt and they were a great start, so thats what i recommend (thats what was recommended when i began)

it took a lil while but i just learned security pins :)

note about master#3: i have two of them and one i can not pick at all.
Nibbler: The poop-eradication is but one aspect of your importance.

Attaboy.

Any cheap brand will do.

I just went to Restore and got 12 for $3.

I would also suggest that you buy a double set (or 2 of the same kind) such as kwickset or master. Even though there are pictures of the locks cut open, you can , drill, mill or grind one of the locks to mess around with what's inside which will also help you remember not only the particular lock you are working on, but will help you in the future. Just my 2 cents on learning... :)

I'll check around this weekend for the best deal on a double deadbolt. How long do it usually take to get your picks?
