False set...next step??

Postby false-set-o9082 » 31 Dec 2008 17:15

I just began learning how to pick locks and am only able to pick the locks without spool pins. I am working on a Master 140 and based on all the instruction I can come by all I am supposed to do is let up tension and pick the pin that is causing the false set. My problem is that as soon as I false set the lock, its like it has turned too much and i cannot pick any more pins until i let the false set go which at that point i am back to where i started. Another issue i have is that if i pick the rear pins first, then i cannot even achieve a false set. i need more instruction than...let up tension and pick the pin. I am positive that every time I get the false set i pick the first two pins and then the third pin.. it clicks over...i try to pick the third pin first and then the others, and if i do this than for some reason i cannot even get the false set. Do you need to false set in order to pick spool pins? If there are 4 pins in the lock how come i only need to pick the first three to supposedly have picked the lock had the spool pin been a regular pin. NEED HELP, its been 5 days and i am at a standstill, i false set the lock a million times and need help from here. all the videos just shake their hand around and BOOM! the lock opens. I have a basic pick set with a small half diamond, finger, and snake rake.

First thing, relax. Frustration causes muscle tension and reduces focus. There can be shallowly serrated pins inside master 140's as well, so not every pin is neccessarily a spool or regular, which means that there could be unaccounted for false sets. Pins dropping back down into the keyway that you thought were set might be hung up on these if they don't give a spools feedback or the lock won't falseset.

A good way to find out if it is a different security driver is to intentionally overlift. That's lift the pin to the first click, then push it past that to look for additional clicks to see if it is a false serrated driver instead of a smooth one. If you got more than one click, but not huge false set it could be one of these.

Second thing, links.

Sounds like you have read some info, so I hope they aren't familiar. If you still want to search use google to search this site for 140, master 140, spools, security pins, etc, and you'll find tons of info. Somewhere there should be a sticky thread with pictures of security pins that has a few 140's pins. Pick from the top of the keyway so you have the extra room, relax, and you'll get the feel for it.
