Master Locks

Postby sugurfoot » 7 Jan 2009 0:06

Here in the US Master has a large amount of locks and keys, Is there a site where the types are laid out and a pix of the different keys. I saw a code reader for the Master Lock keys but felt $19.95 was to high a price. What does it take to get information about locks from Master Co? Be a dealer? I was told not all Master Locks are re keyable or worth it.?

Also if I might ask another question here how does pad locks breakdown in types?

Actually pretty much all the information available on master locks currently being produced is on their website. http://masterlock.com Maybe not always which lock has what security pins, but key biting specs, rekeyalbe lock options, product numbers, etc...

Lock types, shackle types, material differences, rekeying method... just like door locks there is no short list for all the different types. Is there a lock you have a specific interest in? Show us the lock, and someone should be able to tell you what it is.

Not a special lock but I did find 2 pad locks a Master 930/6230 (no key) and a Master # 576 (also no key) I just hate to throw good things away and thought these might be something to pratice impression on, but didnt know what blank to use. I run into a lot of Master Locks thought I might venture into them when I want to try something different. Im really doing deadbolts and doorknobs now, didnt want to purchase a bunch of new tools so I will get in a little ata atime.

The first number in 930/6230 is a product number. So is the second number. I remember a similar code on the bottom of a master I've misplaced. It was a big round chrome lock. I think the codes are just a product series number for the body, but I don't know any way to tell the exact lock from either of those numbers. Type both into their search engine and see if you can match the options. I'm pretty sure they are both security pinned, so maybe get you feet wet impressioning with another lock first.

If the big one is rekeyable, then pick it and repin it. I'm pretty sure the 576 isn't considered consumer rekeyable. They have a pdf on the website that lists the keyway options for each lock they make. It's lost somewhere in the files on my flashdrive. If I find it before you do I'll list the possible factory blank's numbers.

impressioning Master locks

Master locks that have the loosely fitting cylinder, (M1 codename?) have a bit different paradigm for impressioning because you cannot hold this cylinder firmly, all you can hold is the lock body that it doesn't fit tightly into. When you turn to bind and when you bump, you mover the entire cylinder inside the lock.

The shoulder of the master key blank will hit the cap lamination that holds the cylinder in. By taking this hit, it prevents hits on the rest of the key edge. cut down the shoulder

For this reason, this area should be watched, and most of the height of the shoulder can be cut away while being careful to leave a bit of it to index the key in the keyway.
Wake up and smell the Kafka!!!
