EVVA 3KS RIM Cylindars on eBay...

Postby spandexwarrior » 15 Dec 2008 23:01

I have no affiliation with this seller, just thought I'd pass on the info since it's not all that easy to find a 3KS in the US for $45. Just search for EVVA and there are quite a few up there now.

Yeah.. we know. ;-) we've known for about 3 weeks about them. and the seller is a jerk. he almost started to sell them for about $20 but then pulled all his auctions and put them up for 50 lock lots for $1900.00 US per lot. then nobody bought them and he's trying to sell them for $45 each, which sure, is less than the original $75 retail price, but for ebay.. $45 a lock is pricey, especially considering current economic times.

With all of us in the locksport community, who are also heavy collectors, this guy would make a killing if he lowered the price. I'd even buy them for $30 buy it now, and buy several if they were $20 per lock, but at that cost, let them sit for a couple weeks until he drops the price.

boycott!

Sorry for the duplicate info. I agree that given the quantity available and the limited usefullness outside of Europe and the locksport community, they could go cheaper. I just was surprised to see them up there and didn't want to pass on it. I guess I was feeling lucky after scoring an Abloy 655 with the Gov't keyway for $45 bucks last week.

I wonder if your key cuts are the same as mine?

Squelch, are those the Abloys with the "thin disks"? The cuts look awfully thin. Beautiful locks! What was the price on those boys?
That 3KS auction seems like an awesome deal. If I was still on eBay, I'd snatch up a few.

It's a 14 disc mechanism, but you'd have to ask Jaakko if it is "thin discs"

There are plenty of those evva rim cylinders on ebay, but a bunch of us decided to not buy for another week or two until the guy drops his price to like $20-$30, because $45 is not a great deal especially since he has 250 of these locks. Hold off if you can, there's plenty for everyone to get a couple.

Thanks

Hey
just wanted to comment , that these cilinders are awesome. The first time I took one appart , I was amazed with the mechanism. And the way they are made is just astonishing. They are definitely worth taking appart.

But I doubt anyone will be able to pick them.

There is one thing to mention though. The patent for the EVVA 3KS expires in 2009. The keys can be duplicated then. There is a new system made , called the 3KS Plus. It was launched this summer. Its bassically the same , but there are 2 new pins , so there are more possible combinations.

They are indeed. Much like those Abloy Profile payphone locks that have been going around.

Thanks. I have been wondering what the difference between the Plus and the sans-plus were for a while now. I assume by "pins" you mean the sliders that follow the grooves on the sides of the key?

Indeed
Its the sliders with the 2 pegs , for the key profile , to be exact.
The sliders with 1 peg remain the same.

I decided to take a gamble, and ordered one off this guy, just before Christmas. Just a word of caution for those considering getting one: mine arrived in terrible shape (looks like it had sat in a puddle for the last three years... I could barely read the EVVA logo through the tarnish on the keys). Be prepared to spend a while cleaning it up if you're hoping for something that's anywhere near the "Condition: New" that he indicates.

That aside, the guy's packing was also the worst I've seen... I'm surprised the lock and keys were still in the box, as there was no padding, and the tailpiece had torn most of the way through the cardboard shipping envelope. (Fortunately, the key-control card seems to have been the only thing broken in transit.)

It's still neat to have a 3KS to play around with... just set your expectations accordingly, if you're thinking of ordering one.

I got one. Its sick. Its actually a deadbolt cylinder, not a rim as he claimed. I rummaged around at work and realized its compatable with an old style arrow deadblot shroud and my U.S. lock hardware on my door. Basically what I'm getting at is that I now have a 3ks on my apartments door.

As far as the condition of the cylinder, mine was in perfect shape. The card was cracked, but I can't really complain. Its not like I'll be ordering more keys any time soon.

thanks for holding off on buying one! :x Why pay $35 when he has 250 of them and will obviously drop the price to $10-$20 in the next month? I'm holding out until he has 10 left and they're 9.99 each, especially with word of locks in bad condition or mis-identified cylinder types.

I agree...with one exception: I will pick this lock. So far I have picked mine with 10 out of 12 wafers installed. I'm fairly consistent with 8 at the moment. Now this practicing the factory bitting and not scrambled, but my technique (SPP on steroids) doesn't really lend itself to prior intelligence being helpful. It's pretty slow but very thorough; you pretty much know the position and state of every wafer at all times (it involves a lot of visual inspection with a flashlight). Once I get it opened full-pinned, I'll see how scrambling affects the difficulty and let you folks know. Wish me luck :-)
