Cheap and easy warded picks

When it comes down to it there is nothing better than manual tools for your Lock pick Set, whether they be retail, homebrew, macgyver style. DIY'ers look here.

Cheap and easy warded picks

A small tutorial on how I make some very cheap but surprisingly durable warded lock picks using binder clip tabs.
This is a medium size binder clip tab. I use all sizes for different locks.

With pliers squeeze on the round bend on each side to achieve the following shape:

Side by side comparison:

Make sure you end up with a very streamiled shaft and that both tangs are bent together perfectly parallel then heat up the clip with a soldering torch (soldering Iron takes too long). Once fully heated apply solder and it should flow on its own perfectly in between the groove. Do this on both sides.

File down the solder after cool to make a sleek profile. Ends can be trimmed to desired widths to adjust for different bittings. These are by no means high tech or ground breaking but they work well and are very durable. Longer clips can be used to make picks with 2 wards on them for locks that require such. I have made hundreds of these and usually put them on keyrings for easy portability.

cool idea, even if warded locks are very uncommon to find...
well, to be honest, yesterday somebody gave me a warded lock, but it was a symbolic present ;)

Well, you know what they say... the simplest ideas are often the most practical. It's definately good to be able to improvise tools like this, I'd say it works just as well without the soldering too.

Not a bad idea for making these picks. Thanks!

If you don't solder then the two prongs twist and just roll around in the center without biting.
