Helping beginners with photo downloading

Postby Slick Pick » 9 Feb 2009 7:58

I’ve posted this request in response to comments a beginner received to the posting of his pictures under the heading “unpickable/anti pick? You tell me” in the "Got questions?" section.
The comments made were : “but personally I think anyone who posts or attaches pictures larger than 800x600 pixels without posting them as a link should be taken outside and repeatedly kicked in the nuts. :D “ and another was: “Posts like this with huge photos should just be deleted.”
I’m sure this was all done in fun, well at least the one with the smiley face, but no where was there an offer to help us as beginners.
My response in that post was:
Now now, don’t be hating. Maybe you could offer to help instead? Remember we are beginners as everyone was at one point in time and could use a little help in how to make adjustments to photos we download. Some people just aren’t as computer savvy as others. I’ve searched over this site and read the photo sections but I didn’t see anything on how to make adjustments in download size. If there is a link here somewhere could someone please post it? If not maybe someone could let beginners know how to re-size the pictures in photo bucket or other picture download sites. Or give us the link to “photo downloads for dummies”? I tried in photo bucket with the last batch I posted and they still came out really big. Thanks as always for all your time and help.
So how about it guys?, we beginners like our nuts just as much as you do and we like and need you help as well. Thanks in advance.

And before anyone goes there, yes I know this is LockPicking101 not Photography101.
But we could still use your help on this. Look at it this way if for nothing else we at least won’t get on your nerves with the big photo downloads.

I was thinking about this the other day and indeed I feel it would be a useful guide, perhaps I'll get round to writing one later.

Anyway just so you know, in photobucket, before you upload your files you set the "reduce to" box under choose files and set it to 640x480(large) that seems to be the perfect size and is how I have posted all my pics. On occasion when I want to keep the full size pics as well I upload them to a separate folder, and just have 2 copies there of different sizes.

As moderators we used to have the option of editing the post from an embedded image to a link. Since the site upgrade where users now upload images instead of linking them we can no longer do that. At least not that I have found, the only option we would have is to remove the picture.

The images in question were posted as attachments, not using the IMG tags else converting them to links would be possible.

Attachments actually reside on lp101's server and use its drive space and bandwidth. One solution would be to disable attachments so people are forced to use the IMG tags or post links as is usual instead. That would save space and bandwidth in the long run.

Hi Olson……..da, da, ta, da it’s Olson to the rescue. I got the first part, even I can handle that! But you and the freakparade lost me on the second part. Remember “Some people just aren’t as computer savvy as others.” :) As long as you two know what you mean that’s all good but Olson if you do take the time to write a guide, it would be greatly appreciated if you could keep the cookie jar down where we computer illiterates could reach the cookies. Thanks for everything guys!
