A real in depth guide with large pics (padlock dismantle)

I thought I would share a guide I made for anyone who was thinking of taking a padlock apart. I'm not going to type it either, no..... I am going to give you LARGE photos, with text so you don't have to worry about if it's been done right.

So here we are

As I was reading I could not help but to flinch when you pulled the plug out. I was sure that the top pins and spring would fall into the plug retaining groove and lock up the plug in the wrong position. If you do this again to other padlocks may I suggest bringing the plug out only enough to clear the bolts and then rotate it so you can lift the top pins with a pick through the bottom of the keyway.

This is exactly the reason the plug has to be rotated 270 degrees clockwise. This ensures the smooth side of the plug is pulled across the top pins & springs.

I've done loads like this..... but my very fist padlock i just went for the pull once it was picked and it jammed up.

I forgot to mention that some padlocks have a 1 peice shackle lock bar. If this is the case and you can't rotate the plug 270 degrees clockwise, then you can try to go anticlockwise 45 degrees to extract the cylinder.

Whatever you do, always make sure that you will be dragging the smooth side of the cylinder out on the pin stack side.

Most padlocks follow the same design & won't differ too much from the instructions to dismantle.

Also, why do you need two? Incase you mash one up?

Ahh... you're like me then! I only take apart locks that are duplicates. I like to keep one of each type of lock in working order, so I can practise picking, drool over them, etc...

I hope one day to open an online "mini-museum" of my locks, as I've quite a few British ones from the period of 1940 -1980. Just don't have time at the mo.

I'm the same too. I just bought 4 x EVVA 3KS rim cylinders off ebay because I knew 100% that when they turn up one of them will be taken apart within 2 minutes.

I desperately want another ASSA 6000 Twin so I can brave making a cutaway out of the one in my collection.

Glad to hear you do the same too SnowyBoy. It makes it expensive, but I would hate to do serious damage to one from my "permanent" collection.

Yeah they are lovely locks.... shame they are RC, would much have preffered euro
