That is an absolutely terrible deal for $60, I'm sure someone here would sell you a homemade cutaway for much less. Most pickers on this site will tell you that cutaway locks don't really help you improve your skill anyway, unless you're having an extremely hard time visualizing what's going on in a lock when you're picking it.

If you really want a cutaway lock, consider posting a thread in Buy/Sell/Trade asking if anyone is willing to sell. $60 is highway robbery for a simple 5-pin cutaway lock IMO.

That does seem high. I've seen 6 pin cutaways on ebay with a bag of extra pins go for about $35 or $40.

If you need help understanding whats going on inside a lock then a cutaway is a sound investment. But not for that price. Post an ad and you should get a lot of responses. Or try making one on your own.

Check eBay. I just got one that will be in the mail today from a regular seller on there for $39.95. The same exact lock, with all the same exact parts and it's a schlage. I'm at work and they have eBay blocked or I would send you the link. Just type cut away locks in the search. The prices vary according to the raw material they have on hand. The lowest price I saw when looking through his feedback was $39.95, so I ask him if he would sell me one at that price since he didn't have any on auction at that price and he did!

I'll send you the link when I get back to the house but I see from my invoice he has a store on eBay called lock pickers mall and a web site at www.lockpickersmall.com. You could always use the same line I did. I’ll also let you know what I think of everything. Also the price I gave you included priority shipping.

Okay here is the link to the seller and one of the locks: http://cgi.ebay.com/EZ-Rekey-Cut-Away-P ... m153.l1262
I was incorrect about the seller’s eBay store name as it is Gifts Treasures and cool tools but the website name is correct. The lock you see is the same price as the one I was looking at but when I went in to look at the seller’s feedback I noticed different prices for the EZ re-key cut away practice lock as you can see in this link: http://feedback.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.d ... dback:2:us. It sold for as low as #39.95 on Feb 6, 2009. So I contacted the seller by “ask seller a question” and told him I noticed a price difference and if he had any for sale at $39.95 I would buy one. That’s when the seller told me the price was contingent on the raw materials he had on hand but if I gave him my Pay Pal email address he wound send me an invoice so I could buy one. I payed on 2-26-09 and the lock came today. He’s out west and I’m on the east coast. Like I said the #39.95 included shipping, which according to the package was $5.60. The lock is re-key able for six pins and comes set up with five plus I received and extra 12 springs not three, 6 spool driver pins and 10 extra bottom pins and a set of keys. I have looked at everything and am very pleased. It was packaged very well and the sliding mechanism works really smooth. And on his web site store he sells the same thing and later I’m sure you could get serrated pins. Sorry for being so long winded but I hope this helps.

I have posted before on one that I found quite good and was $40. The mini-review I did of it is here:

Incase it might be of interest to anyone.

Thanks Engineer that’s a great deal. After grubbing down some food to get to my new toy, I have to say I love it. As a beginner it’s really cool to actually see what’s going on inside the lock with the cut away. I already knew that when you think you’re lifting one pin stack you can actually be lifting multiple stacks at once but actually seeing it is totally different. I believe using a cut away as a beginner will help you not only see and feel what you’re doing and what needs to be done when lifting pin stacks but it also helps see and improve the correct tension needed and how that tension affects the setting of the pins. Along with being able to see the amount of lifting force needed to lift pin stacks as well as being able to see what’s going on with the binding pins and false sets.

I would invest in a dremel and a couple cheap kwikset cylinders. If you're going to take this up as a regular hobby this tool will earn its keep right off. Not to mention all of the other things its good for.
