circular tension wrenches

Tool recommendations, information on your favorite automatic and/or mechanical lockpicking devices for those with less skills, or looking to make their own.

circular tension wrenches

Postby Moosekace » 6 Mar 2009 2:17

I had my eye on these a long time ago but never got around to asking about them or finding someone who had one I could try. They are the ones with the pins that go into the top and bottom of the lock and the access to the keyway is through the center of the tension wrench.

I think this is the tool he's referring to.

I've never tried it but it's one of the next 10 in my DIY list :)

Yeah femurat thats the one. I really like my double ended tweezer style tension wrench but it pops out a lot. I think this one would be easier to keep in the lock

They do hold into locks amazingly well for two bent wires.

they are not a tool that is immediately useful and is something I would suggest onyl getting once you have a nice little toolbox going already... The reason I say that, is because they have the effect of making the keyway feel deeper and so harder to pick - Almost trying to pick a safe lock, you feel you are picking down a well sort of thing.

The other thing is that I tend to rest the back of my pick against the bottom of the keyway, or tension wrench, so I can have more precise control of the pick. I find I cannot do that reliably with a circular tension tool. Perhaps it takes more practise, but certainly I've found that while they do solve more problems than they cause, it has limited the usefulness of the tool for me. There has just been the odd occasion where it was invaluable.

You will need to clamp the lock in a vice if your going to use a circular wrench.
A big downside for me.
I have one, it's nice looking but does not get any use at all!

I could see how they would be nice for locksmiths opening front doors for people who are locked out, but for padlocks and unhoused cores, it seems kind of awkward.
