kwikset knobset lock

Postby 89ls1 » 11 Mar 2009 21:21

I have a door knob with kwikset lock in it and was wondering if it has some sort of security. When I pick it the plug spins but only a quarter way then stops and its still locked. Does this no matter which way I pick it and stays locked. I can easily pick every kwikset dead bolt I have tried and have picked schlage deadbolts. The kwiksets are cheap locks so I did not think they contain sidebars are anything like that.

The Kwikset knob only turns just past half way to each side. CW locks it and CCW opens it. If your lock is not working that way then something may be broken or need lubrication. You did not say whether you have a key that does work. If you do have a key, try lubricating the guts of the lock when it is off the door. Your turning tool may not have enough strength to turn the locking part alone. We often must add a small screwdriver to overcome problems like these.

If you give us more hints we'll make up more reasons.

I do not have a working key but I will still just dissasemble and clean the lock and try again...I did however use a small screwdriver and used a good amound of force on it..Maybe the lock is just messed up. It was in use for some time on my back door before I replaced it with a more secure lock.

Atleast I know Im not doing anything wrong because I am picking it (SPP) and it does not take but 20-30 seconds give or take.

if it turned about 10 degrees and stoped, then i would guess it has security pins, but in this case its probably just jammed

It works fine now.. It just needed a good cleaning and now is as easy as its dead bolt counterpart.
