All you need to find the diagrams for most locks is to put the patent number in http://www.google.com/patents .

google? I've never heard of this site. what a weird name! I predict they'll never succeed with such a funny name.. This company and site will probably be down within a year.

I can't resist mentioning this here, but have you come across those site that want to SELL you access to the patents that Google's patent search will let you download for free? How do these places stay in business???

Yes this has been posted before but it is likely buried amongst thousands of other posts. Thanks goes out to the poster of this topic as I had forgotten all about it. I think I will go ahead and make this a sticky topic so it is always easy to find for other members and especially new members who are curious as to how a certain type of lock functions. It will be much easier to tell the newbie to search google patents for abloy or medeco or schlage primus etc.

Congrats to the member who posted this topic as you have posted a great link and earned yourself a sticky post.
For the best book out there on high security locks and their operation, take a look at amazon.com for High-Security Mechanical Locks An Encyclopedic Reference. Written by our very own site member Greyman! A true 5 Star read!!

...and getting a sticky on your first post is VERY impressive as well! Has anyone else ever managed that? - I certainly didn't! I'm still waiting for my first sticky

There must be many ways to find numbers to search for. The way I do it anyway is firstly to go to the website:

http://www.google.com/patents

There you can type in the patent number stamped into one of your locks and find out a lot about who thought of it, who made it, how it works, etc.

The main method I use though is to simply search for a name. A lot of maufacturers list their locks under the name of an individual, rarther than the company name. This makes searching for a specific patent quite difficult sometimes. However it is well worth doing anyway, searching for "medeco" for example pulls up a fascinating collection of ways of picking them.

When you click on the link at Google Patent search, it brings you to a summary page, where you can click on "Download PDF". You might want to look a little further down the page first, as you often get the Patent numbers of related inventions under "Citations" and "Referenced by" that are frequently of considerable interest as well.
