MPXS-14-O vs MPXS-14...

Postby wiz4769 » 13 Mar 2009 12:42

As a noob I was looking into getting the "standard" set to get started, And came across the MPXS-14-O at SouthOrd's site. It appears to be the exact same as MPXS-14 , but doesnt give anymore of a discription at all. The only thing I can think of is O is for open box or something like that? Seem most sets have an -O counterpart and they are $10 cheaper....

You mean This?

SLIGHTLY BLEMISHED >>bla bla yadda yadaa

In my experience "slightly blemished" has been very superficial so to get some money off, not a bad idea at all.

Have you you put any thought in to getting a slimline set though? They are particularly good for padlocks and the like.

Ya thats the one, I just placed an order for it...

I have not looked at slimlines yet...from what I read(see Noob reference in first post)I thought that was for you guys over the water mainly and not for most American locks.

I figured the MPXS-14-O should get me by and I basically got it with free shipping with the cheaper price of $27, $37 shipped....

Yup, it's a great set and for the money you can't go far wrong.

Slimlines aren't necessarily just for over here, they will work on all pin tumbler locks, especially those with really tight keyways. You can order individual slimlines anyway if you find you need them, it's probably best to find out which ones you like the shape of and go from there.

I really hope you enjoy this hobby and you will love your set. I remember waiting for my first set to arrive and having already bought a padlock to practice on, the suspense was unbearable!

Have fun :)

Thanks for the kind words, I have always wanted to learn how to do this stuff. Like most you grew up seeing it in movies and thought, man that would be cool...

Just from reading here today...I managed to open my office cabinet 2 times in a row just now in like 10 sec each time with a paperclip and tiny flat head screwdriver...heh

Well I just got my set and I can see very slight scratches in the handles, just a thin line, cant feel it, just can see it barely on a few of the picks, looks as if they were done while on the line as they are all perfect lines and in the same spotish...so thats the blemished part I assume....doesnt bother me a bit to tell the truth. I have opened every lock in my office, cabinets, files , ect so far...now I need to dig up some other locks.

Glad the picks worked out well for you.

However, I would advise that you get out of the habit of opening locks that are in use. Locks - especially mastered locks like found in offices and wafer locks like found in cabinets - can be badly damaged by picking. Go to a junkyard, or a locksmith, or a ReStore, or your local handyman and get some used locks to practice on. You'll get a better challenge and you won't have to explain to your boss when you need a $125 locksmith call to fix a broken lock.

Ya I dont plan on making a habit of using these, I just couldnt wait is all..heh.

Called up my father, who is retired and has nothing better to do...and hes dug up about 6 different locks for me so far, all kinds of pad locks and house locks as well. Then I will get a generic kwikset for fiddling with soon.

This place is great by the way. Lots of info and most you guys seem pretty laid back like me so looks like we will get along well.
