Brass Eaton Yale padlock identification "USFS?"

Postby pole_cat » 17 Mar 2009 1:58

Hi yall!
I found this at an estate sale here in Texas. No key, I got it for 50 cents.
I've yet to crack this one, and just wanted to see if anyone knew what it was.

It's got USFS on it. I suspect it stands for United States Forestry Service, but I may be wrong. I've searched Google and the forums, but I could not find a single result for "eaton" or "USFS"

Yale of course gave me lots of hits. Here's the pic of it!
Let me know if you got a line on it

I dont see the edit button,

It looks like this but not in steel, and I think the one I have is actually larger.

This looks a lot closer to what I have, though the hasp is brassed too.

SCORE! Nice find. Well, most of the markings are pretty clear. Its a Yale lock. I suspect the Eaton is from the Yale Eaton & Towne Co, which I remember being stamped on some old yale stuff i have. No idea about the USFS though.

I would attribute the USFS to an agency marking, on the assumption that this was a contract lock. I'm inclined to think that USFS is United States Forest Service.

I think thats the Yale 700 series.. Forestry service is probably
correct since the brass shackle would point to outside use.

We actually still get calls for those things for some customers
on older systems. They can key into full size key master systems
so the doors and padlocks are all on the same key.

Their expensive though in comparison to whats available today and
the bad part is the plugging for the pins makes it a pain if you ever
want to rekey it.

The keyway is interesting... Not high security but Yale does use thier Surety keyways for special applications which are just unique millings.

Eaton was the parent company at one time back in disco take one

If you polish the side of the padlock above the pins, or whack
it a good shot on the bench, you'll see the pin caps that are press fit at
the top of the pin chambers.

These would need to be drilled out to
take it apart. I would soak it and lube it first before going that far.
Shouldnt really need to go that far.

BEST PADLOCKS!

I've heard of them!

US Forest Service Lock. Standard Lock used nationally on access gates and most buildings. Keys and blanks are gov. regulated and hard to come by. Let me know if you need more info about the lock, got a few myself.

I believe the key blank is an Ilco 997PA As far as bitting goes I got no idea.
I also have a couple of these locks.
