Cell key

Postby Major Boothroyd » 4 Apr 2009 9:31

Was at a police station yesterday, and before you ask, I didn't do anything , anyway I came across this key. I'm guessing it's a cell key although I'm not sure if I drew it right since I only got a glimpse at it. But the thing was huge and I just have to ask for a picture or the name of the lock it opens. Don't need anything technical or how to pick it, just what it is.

thanks.

Hello Major,

That looks like a Folger Adam key. They make prison and holding cell locks.

Here are some generic blanks: http://www.correctionsproductsco.com/media/images/prod_key_FA.jpg

Here is a pic of the key and lock.

Enjoy,

Squelchie, you are a positive font of strangely compelling weird information

I honestly cannot think of anyone else who would even have pics to hand of them... I'm impressed (again) at what you seem to know right off the top of your head.

I have always thought it was probably one of these that was seen by a locksmith in a UK jail about 10 years or so ago? The media had mixed feelings about it all, as it cost the taxpayer many thousands of £s to change all the locks in the prision. At the same time, it was also slightly funny and downright impressive that he got just a glimpse of the master key... and then went on to make a copy of it for himself. It was said with some irony that for a while, one of the inmates actually had more access throughout the prison than the warders themselves did...

Thanks for the kind words Engineer, they're always welcome.

Cheers!

Folger Adams or Southern Steel. Head shapes are about the same-the Folger Adams has an "A" cast in the circle and the Southern Steel has a "SS" cast in the circle.

Wanted to thank you all sooner but life's got me a bit occupied, so thank you very much for the picture squelch, that's quite an impressive lock and looks like what I came across. Looking through all the key catalogs and info I could find I'm guess it's unlikely for there to be a gap in between the top and bottom halves of the key which is what I could've sworn I saw.

Still it's something interesting to look into and that's what matters, at the least this'll distract me from not being able to pick open my Yale padlocks.

Folger Adam and Southern Steel are owned by the same parent company and the only two other companies that I've come across that deal with correctional facilities all seem to have the same type of mechanism and keys apart from subtle differences in profiles, now I don't know much about lever locks, actually I barely know anything at all, but wouldn't this leave room for vulnerability? I mean the locks have unique tumblers and unique placing of components and I'm sure they're much more difficult to manipulate than they seem and as the saying goes why fix it if it aint broke, it just seems there should be more competition than there is right. Although it's probably that even if you somehow get you cell open you're still not going anywhere.

Anyway this site has some good quality photos of the locks for anyone else that may be interested:

This a true, Squelchtone knows all. However, to be fair, last time I checked he owned four of them. =D
