Padlocks can be a way to start off but they are different from other locks in that they require a lot more pressure on the tension wrench and when you move on to deadbolts and door knobs you will find yourself using way to much pressure. I would suggest you go down to the local home improvement store and get a deadbolt and a pad lock or two. When looking at pad locks get a really cheap one and then get a heavy rekeyable one so you can take out some pins if it is to hard.
Also there is nothing wrong with trying locks around the house but you might find that they are harder to pick because they have been exposed to the elements (depends on where you live). There are also the practice locks that have part of them cut away so you can see the pins, I found them very helpful in the begining, but cost quite a bit, but if you can afford them go with them.
