Recomend me some beginner picks please >.<

Postby zoukai » 30 Apr 2009 8:00

I am new to this site and I want to learn to lock pick.
I was wondering if this is a good beginner pick.
http://www.lockpickshop.com/C500.html
I don't want to dish out 20 bucks and waste it.
If not can you recomend me some decent lock picks? and some good beginner pad locks to pick? Please and Thankyou

PXS-14 is fine for what you need, it is what most people start with.

The slimlines are a bit more expensive because they are slightly thinner and thus have a bit more room to move inside the lock or in restrictive keyways, but as a beginner this should not matter much to you.

Personally I would go with the slimlines, especially if you're aiming at padlocks as some have very small keyways. I dare say you will end up with slimline style picks in the end anyway.

The C801 represents slightly better value for money so far as how many picks you get, but in all honesty I only use a couple of different hooks and a half diamond nowadays. All the other picks in my 3 large set hardly get a look in so to begin with, personally I would get the C500.

What ever set you go for, make sure all the picks come with the (re-enforced) metal handles, the plain ones get uncomfortable after a while and the handles are a little bendy which I find impairs feedback.

You could even look in to making your own tools if you enjoy the hobby, that is a heck of a lot of fun.

You can never have enough wrenches, by the way, different sizes, top/bottom tension styles, flat etc. After all, the wrench opens the lock, the picks just make it possible to do so.

I think that the first set is a fine set to begin with. Those are the same picks that are in my SouthOrd jackknife pick and I have opened countless locks with it. When it comes to buying picks, it's more about knowing how to use the picks than what specific picks you have.

I would use Search and read some posts before asking this question. People ask us every week which set is best for a beginner, there are dozens of threads about it, you will find plenty of good suggestions if you just do a little homework.

Also, tell us what you're trying to pick or what you think you'll use as practice locks, that will help.

I disagree... you get 5 hooks and a bunch of other stuff you'll hardly ever need. There is a bunch of stuff for auto locks but unless you're gonna get hardcore into raking car locks you're wasting your money.

Apart from the hook picks and double sided wafer rakes, you get:

- Dimple rake which is ok, but not amazing. Will fit stuff without warding such as certain MTL's and kaba style cylinders
- Saw type rake which is alright, but very thick
- Double half ball rake, eugh...
- Couple of lifter picks which are far too thick
- A super shallow half diamond which is good for bypass and fishing the cam in euros, although you can just use a hook for that stuff anyway... so meh

There is also a variety half diamond type picks which are too thick for any keyway although you can just about scrub the pins with them if that's your thing. Judging by the thickness of them I'd assume they're actually made for autos aswell... so if you're looking at picking pin tumbler locks, for £25 all you're really getting is a set of 5 hooks and some realy crappy rakes. The tension wrenches aren't very good either.

I also have a set of those shalon picks which cost about £5, and they're the same quality as the goso... not superb, but with normal use they hold up very well. The tension wrenches supplied still suck, but apart from that they're pretty good, and the filler picks aren't quite as useless. I bought that goso kit years ago cos it looked big and impressive, it really isn't. If you're gonna spend £25, spend it on something you can get plenty of use out of! That's my 2 cents

When I started picking I went with a few hooks and a simple rake. You might check out something similar to the TOOOL Beginners toolkit to start (http://deviating.net/lockpicking/equipment.html).

While you are at it, pick up Deviant's book called Practical Lock Picking. Great read for beginners.

Good luck.
