First Homebrew EVER

Postby TheSkyer » 29 Apr 2009 11:17

Elloha,

I got sick and tired of everyone showing of the most awesome picks ever so I decided to give the whole home brew field a go myself. To clarify, this is not only my fires home made pick, this is my first home made item EVER, I never DIY. I had to buy quite a bit of equipment since I don't do DIY so I don't even have the basic.

However, for this pick I used:

- A Bench Vise (especially bought for making picks and holding practice locks).
- A Dremel tool with some extra bits and parts like extra tops and a tubular extension so I don't need to log around with that big lumpy thing
- Street Sweeper bristols to make the picks out of.
- Shrink wrap for handles

So, without further ado, A PICTURE! (keep in mind I never do DIY :P)

Tomorrow I may try a series of half diamonds to form a rake, not sure jet. Will upload some picks when I got more to show ;)

Nice idea start making stuff yourself. I've always loved DIY: there's nothing better!

About your pick I think you have to work a little more to define the shape of the tip... let us see how it turns out.

Cheers :)

Here's another one I made today. It works well but doesn't look as nice as intended and the concept didn't really work out. to bad...

Turns out I left to little metal under in the part between the tip and the handle. It tends to bend so it's not all that useful, I'm going to make a completely new diamond.

Does anyone have good tips on what materials and how to make nice handles for these picks? Shrink wrap works but it doesn't look all that pretty and I prefer a somewhat sturdier handle.

I think this tutorial can give you an idea for easy and good handles...

Good luck

Here's a little update on what I have been doing.

I've redone my diamond since the other one was to bendy and would eventualy break, I also fabricated a hook and something that should resemble a Bogota rake. Critique is welcome!

There's one standard tention wrench and the other once is 2 pieces held together by shrinkwrap, steel spring wire and ducttape, it's not ellegant but it works WELL (really can't overtention).

As I only tried to ever make spanners (MG Midget wipers RULE!!) I may be easy to impress.
But they DO look good!

It's easier than it looks, honestly. How the bogota I gave you fairing? I will try and make you a better one which will endure a bit more brutal use. See you in eindhoven ;)
