KIK complete breakdown

Postby jpb06080 » 10 May 2009 18:45

So I have had this grade 2 USCAN key in knob lock lying around without a key for a while. I thought instead of picking it open and removing the cylinder that way, I'd show some of you how to remove the cylinder from a knob or lever when picking or drilling is not an option.

Image

Step 1: Remove the knob on the inside. This knob is entry function, but the steps would be the same for most any function. This is done by depressing the retaining clip.

Step 2: Remove the covering shroud. This is done by sliding the wire out of place. It is usually a good idea to make a mark with an on the ends where it was attached so you know where it goes upon reassembly. Once the wire is removed, Depress the latching carraige to slide the shroud up.

Image

Step 3: Push back 2 of the 4 tabs holding the plate in place with pliers. Once these have been pushed back, the plate along with the entire inside column will lift out. This is probably the most difficult part to reassemble, so be very attentive to where everything goes.

Step 4: Remove the latch carriage and springs, then the plunger which engages the tailpiece.

Once this is done, the tailpiece of the cylinder will hang loosely, no longer obstructing the retaining clip. You can now depress the retainer, thereby removing the cylinder.

Next, swap out the crappy schlage knockoff with Sargent signature!

(I was going to do this, but unfortunately the cylinder I have has a non adjustable vertical tailpiece, and the USCAN calls for a horizontal one...)
