Bricard Chifral S2 - Is this bumpable?

Postby workstation » 13 May 2009 20:15

http://protectvol.online.fr/hautesecurite.html says that the Bricard Chifral S2 has "Protection
anti-bumping"

Also the manufacturer's website here : http://bricard.com/fr/actualites/produi ... ralS2.aspx says it's "Résistant au bumping".

I strongly suspect it isn't actually particularly resistant (or at least isn't immune) to bumping unless there are new components the diagrams don't show. It appears to just be a pin tumbler lock.

Does anyone know what (if anything) they added to the S2 to give it "bump resistance"? They seem, if I'm reading correctly, to have changed the movable element, but I don't see how that would add bump resistance except in some tricksy mechanical way to make the bumping itself difficult. Or have they introduced unbumpable tumblers like in the new Mul-T-Locks? (In which case, why still include the old bumpable ones? But we've had that thread.)

I can't really pass too much judgment as I don't know much about that particular lock, but based off the photos on the links you provided it seems the primary resistance to bumping is going to be from the key control aspect. It appears that there is an interactive portion to the blank, which would make it more difficult to replicate, not to mention blanks are probably restricted.

That being said, I don't see why an existing key couldn't be drilled down to make it the same as any other dimple-style bump key. Perhaps the 'interactive' part of the key would prevent you from taking any off the tip needed for bumping?

Then again, there might be nothing fancy about it at all. It's the manufacturer's job to advertise the product well and make it appealing to the target audience, in this case individuals who are willing to pay more for "higher security" and are therefore maybe savvy to terms like "bumping". That doesn't mean they necessarily have to be right :)

Have a look in my book on high security mechanical locks (click my sig for info). Chifral is written up in there. There is a special arrangement of two opposing pins that gets actuated by the "spade" in the key. I don't think bumping works very well in general on Kaba type locks and Chifral is not far away from that design. Having said that, I will stand corrected if someone has actually tried to bump it and succeeded! :)
