which beginner picks to get?

Postby dooodstevenn » 26 Apr 2009 0:44

im new to the picking community, and im really confused about which pick set to get? which picks are most useful? slimline or U.S. picks? and the list goes on...

so far i have gotten it down to these sets:
http://www.lockpickshop.com/C500.html
http://www.lockpickshop.com/C801.html
http://www.lockpickshop.com/C1500.html
http://www.lockpickshop.com/PXS-14.html

the last one (PXS-14) was the one i was leaning toward but i don't think i will need so many..thanks for all the help guys :]

Out of those sets, personally I would go for the C801. The slimline models will work on both US and EU pin tumbler locks and will be more suitable for the tighter keyways you find on some padlocks.

The other thing to look out for is all the picks in that set come with the full metal handles, although I've never tried the "slip on vinyl" handles on the PXS-14.

May I suggest a bit of a browse around the forum as well if you're still a bit unsure. Many people have asked this question before.

Good luck :)

also i will go for the C1500.
I personally will got for the C1500.Because it has
Fifteen Piece Slim Pick Set
for European and Japanese locks
and U.S. locks with small or narrow keyways.
hope this helps.

definately the slimline but i would suggest to go for the larger set as ou will probably snap a couple of picks while you learn (i know i did) so you wont have to pay postage again

Im not sure that a larger set would give the OP more of what s/he needs, they seem to contain a more diverse range of rakes and such which I personally never use.

If youre breaking or bending picks, far to much force is being applied, probably from the tension wrench. Really, a feather touch is all that should be required and very delicate, deliberate movements of the pick to not disturb set pins. Slow and steady.

Anyway, this thread is nearly 4 weeks old, I dare say dooodstevenn has either bought the picks or given up.

The last set would be easy to carry with you, so you would have it when you need it.

If he hasn't already ordered in the 18 months since his initial post, he's probably not ever going to.

Hi!

I'm new to lockpicking and I bought some cheap picks to get started. Couple of days I tried and tried and then I got open this ABUS 65/40. Then my pick (which was the only one to get this lock open) went broke. I think that it was because I used too much force in the beginning (this weakened the pick) and when I realised that I have to use a feather touch and got this lock open several times, it broke.

Now I am considering in buying more andvanced set and there is couple of sets I've been looking for.

http://www.lockpickshop.com/C1510.html It is in my budget but to Europe there is 11$ shipping fee

http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.16416 This is cheap and there are much different picks. Also there are no shipping cost
