Dimple Impressioning, what do you prefer ?

Postby FrenchKey » 4 Jun 2009 16:28

Hello,

For few days, I've been impressioning on dimple locks I only use brass blanks and a file, like with normal pin tumbler locks.

I had pretty good results despite the bad looking aspect of my working keys :P :

What about you ?
Do you use a file or a drill with a dremel or something similar ?
I never tried foil impressioning for dimple lock, but probably soon.

Did someone already open a mul-t-lock by impressioning ?

I find that we don't speak that much about impressioning there, especially concerning others locks than traditional pin tumbler locks. Don't people use it ?

Holy crap! That's awesome. I can't beleive you were able to impression like that. (not sure if it will cross the language barrier, but you're giving MacGyver a run for his money)

I've done it before, but I prefer to do the filing across the whole bitting surface. It seemed a bit easier for me, rather than at an angle.

I'd love to try MTL impressioning, but can't seem to find any blanks for it. Anyone? Classics aren't patent protected anymore, surprised they are so hard to find. Might get fed up with looking and mill some soon :)

thanks tballard. Not easy at the beginning but with some practice, you become better.

@datagram : filing across the whole surface is what I did the first time I made a dimple key by hand (for a French Challenge that consisted in copying a dimple key only thanks to a picture of the original). and... please see the result :

The sixth pin position is 0.25mm thick. Don't know in inches, but, it's quite thin  (But it does the job, my key is a great copy of the original one :D )
So I do recommend to file at an angle ;)

Concerning MTL, The main problem is the pin-in-pin system, isn't it ?
How do you handle that for impressioning ? (unless you own a MTL drilling machine of course)

I go for filling at the angle, however when getting to the deepest pin have used a rotary burr to keep the blank strong
I have also seen the foil impressioning done with the tape you use on air ducting, and seen basla wood used to the same effect.
some locks (KESO I THINK) have different coloured lower pins so can be simply decoded by scoping.

My latest dimple Impression : KESO 2000 S
3 rows of pins with some special bottom pins (called staggered pins in the Oli's book)

I broke my key but I was sure that I was not far from the end, so I forced a little and the key worked

You can see the piece of key inside the lock.
