Question about buying picks for UK locks..

Postby J-dawg » 1 Apr 2009 14:31

I have looked around a bit to see if this question was answered but I'm still in a predicament (mainly because the search feature ignores uk lol)

I've read that UK locks are smaller and so slimline picks could be useful, but I was wondering if anyone who actually lives in the UK has the normal picks that work in the US..

i'm mainly asking this because i can save $15 and a few days if i order the MPXS kit and will save money in the future but if it's necessary i can just buy the slimline..

On the devonlocks site (UK), it says:
Some people have said that they have more trouble using the Slimline picks..
whereas the thread for new users advices for us going for slimline picks..

and ends saying:

if your not sure which to go with, go for the slimmer set listed above.

see i'm not sure which to get and i'm all for savin some money given the current economic crisis..

thanks

On one hand, the extra thickness is not such a big deal, but the thinner picks are much more helpful in both kinds of locks, and not *that* much more expensive. If you are in the UK that is all the more reason to go with the slimline picks to start out with :)

I agree.
I bought a normal set first, but after that I realised that there are several locks which doesn't take the picks or tension wrenches.
So I bought the slim line version and I'm very happy with it (although I could have bought a smaller version since now I have several picks which I'll probably never use) ;)

I'm from the Netherlands so we have similar locks.

One additional note:

for tougher locks (dirty, etc) the picks can be too small making it difficult to use enough force without breaking or bending the pick.
So I still use both sets, but I primarily use the slim line version ;)

thanks.. i might just get a small slimline kit and then buy some thicker ones on top of that, that is if the order which did not appear to go through last night is actually cancelled.. (fingers crossed)

just been playing around with some single pin picking, two paperclips and an abus 65/40..

I prefer the feel and feedback from slimline hooks, but in dirty used locks they are somewhat more touchy. If your lock is really hosed then I would be careful you could bend your picks pretty badly if you try to use heavy-handed lifting pressure. Like most of the other posters here, I use both. My pickset that is in my pocket at work only has a couple of picks, two of which are a Slimline hook and a normal shorthook. You can't go wrong with lots of hooks!

In your case I would recommend buying a small regular set of picks and a small slimline set, they are both going to be used, also I highly recommend buying from uklockpickers.co.uk, they have great customer service and great products.

you can always thin down the thicker picks with a dremel type grinding tool, just be carefull not to get them to hot else they will get weaker

I am in London, and tend to use my RYTAN slimline set or a plug puller..excellent bit of kit
