$25 Abloy Protec Padlock

Information about locks themselves. Questions, tips and lock diagram information should be posted here.

$25 Abloy Protec Padlock

Postby subver » 30 Jun 2009 7:05

So, there's a $25 Abloy Protec on securitysnobs.com (https://securitysnobs.com/Abloy-Protec-PL-321-Padlock.html)
Why is this so inexpensive? I think I have to buy it if it's only $25!
I just don't understand why it's a fraction of the price of any other Abloy..

It's an Abloy Protec PL321 - for the record.
I think I'm going to buy it, just to have it :)

I can't find all that much info on it, though - like why the heck it's only $25 for starters.

Also, can this padlock be disassembled? I hear I'm better off getting the 330 if I want to disassemble it (it's $70, though) - but is this one impossible to disassemble without drilling or cutting?
Just trying to get all the info I can on this nice little padlock. Either way, though.. I think it will make a nice start to my lock collection :D

It's a luggage lock.

Probably the most secure luggage lock ever, but still, it's a luggage lock. 'Bout the size of a big postage stamp.

Would be neat for novelty, but probably not very good for picking. Doubt it can be disassembled becasue Abloy's site says it can't be rekeyed.

Yeah, I mean I just want it mainly for collecting, and to work towards something (maybe one day I could pick it) - but Maybe I should go with the 330 - that can be disassembled as well.. and $70 isn't TOO much..
Wouldn't the keyhole still be the same, even though it's a luggage lock? I mean the body is just smaller, right? Maybe not as many discs?

I am no Abloy expert, but I believe they have four different key diameters.

You can often find Abloy used, especially at those auctions they have when a business is closing.

Honestly, it might be a nice lock for a collection lock, just because of the novelty value.

Hello, I have a pl321 Protec from securitysnobs.com and its the best thing since sliced bread.

Its about the size of a Master No.3, just a dash smaller. The shackle is thin so yes it could be used on your luggage, your laptop bag, toolbox, or more commonly on jewlery store display cases. Other uses include server racks, breaker panels, and anywhere else you don't want someone with an unauthorized key messing with your stuff. If your stuff goes missing and there is no physical damage and the lock hasn't been cut or drilled, then someone who was given a Protec key is responsible for the theft, its that simple.

There is a hole on the left side of the pl321 which has a metal rod smashed into it, to retain the Protec core. It is not user serviceable.

happy shopping, this is one of my favorite locks in my collection, and on the other end my Pl362 is also on the list.

:P

I think you convinced me, squelchtone :)
It just looks like a nice lock, and of course I won't be able to pick it (yet?) but it will be nice to have.
Are there less discs or anything in there, or is it a standard Protec core? Just trying to figure out why it's only $25 :P

You wont be able to pick this with one of the regular disk detainer picks. So, maybe you should get a cheap chinese disk detainer padlock as well.

This is a fine lock, and definitely worth the price + shipping. IIRC, the reason they can sell so cheaply is because they have an international collector (not sure if he wants his name divulged, someone help me out) on board to help buy locks in bulk. This lock should have the full 11-disc pack in it. I'll count the notches on my key and follow up if I'm mistaken.
