Starting my own business

I am about to finish my schooling, within the next few months I will be a bonafide locksmith although a (Noob) of course. That's were my question lies... It's a multi-focal question so to speak. First off I was thinking of starting out doing mobile lockouts and other general locksmithing duties, lock installations etc.. to build up a working capitol before moving to an actual brick and mortar shop.
I was curious to know what kind of outlay should I be looking at tools, supplies etc? Since this is going to be my first self run business any helpful suggestions would be gladly accepted! They (My school) will be giving me upon graduation and final tuition payment an ILCO 027A KEY DUPLICATOR MACHINE . Is this one any good or should I start looking for something better?
What else should be on my "need to get" list? I know it's going to take some time to get all that I will be needing to run a true locksmith shop so I appreciate being pointed in the right direction. And also I would really appreciate a mentor so to speak if at all available. Thanks in advance.

It's a bit surprising since the 027A is officially discontinued. It's your standard basic duplicator. Many of the "we duplicate keys" place use one around here. It's like a bigger (longer really) 008 machine. I've never used one so take with major grain of salt, but you might want to hang on to it while you start up anyway. You'll have plenty other things to spend your money on.

First and foremost make sure you get your locksmith license in California. Otherwise you are asking for trouble.

Then you will be able to purchase tools and stock unhindered by the red tape.

Purchase a decent set of screwdrivers, battery drill, power hammer drill, spade bits, masonry bits, twist drills, impression files and most important, lock lubricant.

Wood chisels, cold chisels, LRT and air wedges. Universal pinning kit. A box of each KW1 and SC1 should be enough to get you started, in my opinion.

Thanks, now that's what I'm talking about. The more info I can get before I graduate and get my license the better. Also I will not be doing anything before I get my license. They are very serious in California. I currently hold a professional license in California and let me tell you, they are the strictest in the country as far as I know. It took them 3 months after I graduated from college here where I live. The problem was that I had a record. Nothing serious mind you. They were both misdemeanors they happened 10 years apart from each other (respectively) and the last offense was almost 25 years ago. Anyhow I disclosed all pertinent info regarding those cases and it still took them 3 months to approve my license.
